Among connoisseurs of pre-war English sports cars, the Invicta 4.5 S Low Chassis is considered a special gem, not because it was particularly easy to control, but because it could be surprisingly fast in the right hands thanks to its high performance and low center of gravity, and it also looked good. At the same time, it remained rare and, with 77 examples produced, a sought-after rarity. This report describes the history of the Invicta company, its successes and its problems right up to the end, supplemented by current and historical images.
Invicta means "the indomitable" or "the indestructible". In the pre-war era, they were feared opponents of Bentley on the race track and were driven as fast touring cars on country roads. Today, they are sought-after collector's items.
The name Invicta is one of the great English terms in automotive history. The brand was founded in 1924 by Captain Noel Macklin and existed until 1936. During this time, however, a number of cars were produced that helped the Invicta brand to achieve immortal fame. Their quality was compared with that of Rolls-Royce and their sportiness with that of Bentley. Invicta's flagship vehicle was the Model 4 4/1 Litre S-Type, built from 1929 to 1934. This report (which is around 30 years old) describes one of these vehicles in detail and reproduces the driving impressions in a comprehensible manner, supplemented with many photos, some of which have never been published before.
