On August 17, 2025 229 automobiles rolled onto the noble lawn of the 74th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance – including 55 international entries from 22 countries and 174 US entries from 31 states. A 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C Nieuport-Astra Torpedo, presented by Penny and Lee Anderson Sr. from Naples, Florida, was named "Best of Show".
Number one
"This Hispano-Suiza really fulfills every conceivable criterion," said Concours Chair Sandra Button. "The engineering is advanced. The wood bodywork is meticulously crafted, lightweight and beautiful. Remarkably, it was commissioned by aperitif heir André Dubonnet - he drove the car in both the Targa Florio and the Coppa Florio."
"A later owner added pontoon fenders to the car, but the Andersons wanted to restore it to its original shape, so today you can see and really appreciate its torpedo shape."
The car, known as the "Tulipwood" torpedo, is actually made of mahogany strips that were individually molded and attached to the inner frames with 8500 rivets. The original weight is said to have been only 160 pounds.
Lee Anderson explained that he was particularly fascinated by the wood on the car: "I like wood! I collect antique wooden boats. I started doing that 40 years ago, long before it became 'in'. I've always loved varnished wood, and when I saw this, I thought: my God! This is exactly my thing. This is what I really love."
When asked if they expected to win, Penny said, "We had no idea, but we dreamed about it!"
"Winning Pebble Beach is probably the highest accolade you can get in car collecting," added Lee. "We are very lucky to have done it twice already." The Andersons had already won the top prize at the Pebble Beach Concours in 2022 with a Figoni-bodied Duesenberg J from 1932.
Hispano-Suiza has won the top prize at Pebble Beach twice before, most recently in 1989.
Strong competition
Competition for the "Best of Show" title was fiercely contested this year and included the 1939 Maybach SW38 Spohn Sport two-seater presented by Dana and Patti Mecum of Geneva Lake, Wisconsin; the 1933 Invicta 4½ Litre S Type Corsica Drophead Coupé, presented by SBH of Riffa, Bahrain; and the 1956 Maserati 200SI Fantuzzi Open Sports Racer, presented by Phillip Sarofim of Beverly Hills, California.
The Concours began on Thursday, when the majority of the cars took part in the 27th Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance, an approximately 70-mile drive along scenic coastal roads. Vehicles completing the tour have an advantage in the event of a tie in the class competition.
Over 4 million dollars donated
The Pebble Beach Concours has already raised over 4 million dollars for charity this year, bringing the total amount raised to over 45 million dollars. Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, the primary charity partner, nearly 100 local non-profit organizations benefit, reaching over 10,000 children in Monterey County annually.
Gooding Christie's, the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance for 21 years, recorded one of its highest-grossing sales last weekend with over $127 million. Several major world records were set, including the most valuable car ever auctioned at Gooding Christie's: a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider Competizione, which sold for over 25 million US dollars.
After the Concours is before the Concours
The 75th anniversary of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance will take place on August 16, 2026 at The Lodge at Pebble Beach and will put the spotlight on the Ferrari brand and coachbuilder Vignale. It will also celebrate the automotive history made at Pebble Beach with specially curated classes on the great road racers of Pebble Beach and a special gathering of iconic car groups brought together for the first time at the Concours. More details and program items will be announced in the fall.
