Leisure suit - Ford Capri in the (historical) test
Summary
The technology of the Ford Capri II (1974-77) was essentially based on its predecessor. Only the chassis was tuned softer and the body smoothed and equipped with a practical tailgate. This made the Capri not only more comfortable and pleasing, but also more streamlined. This test report from that time investigated whether the Capri was still competitive.

The Capri II doesn't attract much attention. Before it was delivered to dealers, it did not attract as much attention on the roads and in parking lots as the Capri I did five years ago. This may be due to the current unfavorable climate for new cars; the Capri had already seen its first price increase before deliveries began. The flowing, almost soft shape of the Capri II probably takes longer to get used to than that of its more angular predecessor. The stylistic relationship is clear: long hood, low seating position (front seats exactly in the middle of the car), short rear. With the same wheelbase of 255.9 cm, the Capri concept did not allow any significant gains in space. The interior length of the dashboard/rear seat backrest remained the same at 155 cm. The minimum knee room in front of the rear seat has improved from 11 to 15 cm. The headroom has been reduced by 2 cm at the front and rear; this is just enough for people up to 180 cm tall at the front - even with the steel crank roof installed. Above 170 cm in height, the rear is very tight; when sitting upright, your head hits the upper edge of the rear window. If you buy the Capri instead of a sedan (e.g. instead of a Taunus), you are buying an occasional four-seater. On long journeys, the front passenger has to push his seat forward on the right to gain the necessary headroom in the rear by sitting at a slight angle. Two adults and two children are comfortably accommodated in the Capri - the ideal crew, so to speak.
