With the 600, Fiat unceremoniously created a new vehicle class. Although unceremoniously is probably the wrong term, because the Turin-based company worked hard to develop it. The result was a vehicle that combined performance and economy and was as sophisticated and well thought-out as few other cars at the time. Several years ago, the Turin plant assigned the following task to not just one but several teams of designers, test and development engineers for the international market that was to be opened up for the successor to the "Topolino" (officially known as the Fiat "500"): A small car with the lowest possible garage and traffic space requirements, with four still sufficient seats, with not too great a design effort that would allow profitable large-scale production, with sufficient road and mountain performance and with the lowest possible running costs (fuel, tax, insurance).
