When Citroën's goddess rolled onto the roads in 1955, it caused a sensation like no other car before it. Thanks to innovative mechanics with front-wheel drive and hydropneumatics, the DS set new standards in comfort and the saloon became a design icon. However, the sloping roofline reduced storage space, an important purchase criterion for certain people. So Citroën launched the Break in 1958, one year after the more affordable ID went on sale. This article reproduces the original test report from 1962 and shows the practical Frenchwoman in many historical pictures.

Apart from American station wagons, the Citroën Break is the most expensive estate car on the market. Anyone who can afford it should - nevertheless, or precisely because of this - include it in their considerations when buying such a vehicle, because the Break should represent the absolute optimum in the field of station wagons in terms of its performance and driving characteristics, and anyone who owns it documents to their expert environment that they understand at least as much, if not more, about cars than they do! The Break is the station wagon version of the Citroën ID or DS 19. The version we drove - there are several nuances of DS similarity that even experts find difficult to distinguish - had the manual gearbox and mechanical clutch of the ID, but the hydraulic brake assistance of the DS. In any case - and this seems to us to be of crucial importance, especially for an estate car - the suspension hydraulics of these two cars!
