Summary
From 1989 to 1999, BMW produced the 850i, a luxury-class coupé with almost all the technical ingredients that were feasible at the time and a silky-smooth twelve-cylinder engine at the front. Later, an eight-cylinder engine was also added. Around 30,000 of these elegant coupés were built and sold and they still look modern today, 25 years later. This report describes a driving impression and briefly describes the development history of the car, supplemented by historical and current photographs.

It stands impressively before us, appearing larger than it actually is at 4.78 meters long and 1.85 meters wide. The BMW 850i was the top product from Munich at the end of the 1980s; 30,000 customers had already ordered it before they were allowed to drive it for the first time. A luxury tourer with everything the wealthy frequent driver could wish for, at 124,000 francs or 140,000 DM it was the most expensive BMW on offer. Today, however, you can buy the noble Bavarian for less money than you had to shell out for the full leather interior back then. Developing a completely new model also involved major risks for BMW. The development team consisted of around 2000 people and the total cost of creating the modern luxury-class coupé was said to be around one billion DM.
