Summary
From 1985 to 1993, BMW built the convertible on the basis of the E30 three-series. Without a roll bar and equipped with a clever roof mechanism, the open-top 325i became one of the most popular convertibles of the 1980s and was so successful that most of its competitors had to follow suit. This driving report describes the 325i variant with the largest displacement and goes into its history, supplemented by many current and historical photos, as well as the sales brochure and engine sound.

Preview (beginning of the article)
In 1985, when BMW presented the open-top version of the three at the IAA, the range of full convertibles on offer was rather limited. Apart from the Alfa Romeo Spider, the Mercedes-Benz SL (R107) and the Porsche Carrera, there were hardly any high-volume models, with the exception of the VW Golf, the Fiat (Bertone) Ritmo or open-top Americans. The convertible renaissance had not even really begun at that time, but BMW engineers had been working on a completely open E30 since 1982, having previously left this business to the Baur company for many years. BMW had built many beautiful convertibles in the pre- and post-war period, including the 328, the 507 and the open-top versions of the 501/502. There was also a convertible version of the BMW 700 and the predecessor of the three-seater, the BMW 1602, was still available as a completely open-top version at the end of the 1960s.
