Summary
From 1966 to 1972, BMW built the 2000, the largest-displacement version of the "New Class", which had begun in 1962 with the BMW 1500. Characteristic of the BMW 2000 was the new face with rectangular headlights, less obvious was the refined technology compared to the "smaller" models. This report describes the sedan trimmed for luxury and shows it in many current and historical illustrations.

Even back then, the BMW 2000 saloon stood out from the majority of cars of the time and also from its brothers, mainly because of its rectangular headlights. The new front promised overtaking prestige. Some people liked the new look, others less so. And this has remained the case to this day. With the "New Class", i.e. the BMW 1500, 1600 and 1800 models, the Bavarian manufacturer had launched a successful series that not only saved the white and blue brand, but also prepared it for promotion to the league of the world's largest vehicle manufacturers. Before the BMW 1500, there was only the Isetta, its extended sister BMW 600 and the still two-cylinder, rear-engined BMW 700, as well as the six- and eight-cylinder models in the upper and luxury classes, which were unaffordable for most people.
