New class, great class - BMW 1800 TI in a historic test
Summary
The BMW 1800 TI almost seems to encourage speeding. The handy little saloon with the big engine was not only ideal for outpacing large luxury cars in the left-hand lane. It also automatically made it possible to cover familiar routes much faster. This historical test report from 1964 explains why this was the case and what else BMW's sporty mid-size class was good and not so good at.

Until now, the undisputed leaders of the touring car pack on German freeways have been the fuel-injected Daimler-Benz models and the V8 models from Munich, which is also where the latest pike in the carp pond comes from: the BMW 1800 TI. The TI can only be distinguished from the other models in this series, the 1500, 1600 and 1800, by the lack of the side chrome strip that adorns the 1800 and the two letters TI behind the 1800 at the rear. It is therefore only possible to identify the 1800 TI correctly once it has overtaken it, which can only be avoided in the rarest of cases.
