When Renault unveiled the production version of the new Alpine A110 at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, this was not a matter of course - after all, the last production sports car had left the workshops in Dieppe back in 1995. And it was no easy task to develop a successor to the legendary A110 sports car. A direct comparison between the Alpine from then and now shows whether the company succeeded. How do you create an automotive legend? You start simply and modestly, focusing on low weight and above-average performance. You improve, win the World Rally Championship and finally win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Small numbers of exclusive sports cars are sold to a demanding clientele. And you survive! This is roughly how the legend of the Alpine could be told. At the center of the story is Jean Rédélé, the founder of the brand and the initiator of the Berlinette Alpine A110. In retrospect, the fact that he sold his company to Renault in the 1970s may have ensured the brand's survival, even if there was a break between 1995 and 2017.
