For Mercedes collectors, the factory museum is well worth a visit on July 12, 2014, when the British auction house Bonhams will be auctioning off 47 vehicles with the three-pointed star.
Single-make events have a long tradition at Bonhams. The Aston Martin auction in Newport/Pagnell is already well established, and three years ago Bonhams also held an auction in cooperation with BMW in Munich.
Now it is Mercedes Benz's turn and the offerings are varied and range from auction classics to Unimog and DTM racing cars. There is even a children's car with pedal drive. In total, the vehicles are likely to be worth around 20 million euros or 24 million francs. An average of 365,000 euros or CHF 445,000 per lot is expected.
Three 300 SLs
Of course, the most famous Mercedes road-going sports cars are not missing. After all, three 300 SLs are depicted in the 180-page catalog.
Probably the most expensive of the three is chassis number 019, which was exhibited at the Paris Salon and was used by Stirling Moss and David Jenkinson in training before their glorious victory at the Mille Miglia (with the 300 SLR). "PLB 23" also served as a test car for the British motoring press. A famous example, no wonder there is no printed estimate in the catalog.
The second 300 SL is said to be worth between EUR 1.2 and 1.5 million (CHF 1.5 to 1.8 million). The chances are good that a bidder will pay that much for the gullwing, which has never been restored and is still in its original paintwork according to the description.
The 300 SL Roadster from 1958 is said to have only covered 34,500 kilometers in its lifetime and is now going under the hammer for between 850,000 and 1 million euros (CHF 1.0 and 1.2 million). With its hardtop, luggage set and retrofitted disc brakes, it is sure to catch the eye of many an SL enthusiast.
Five Pagodas
Five convertibles from the R113 series are up for sale in Stuttgart: two 230 SLs, one 250 SL and two 280 SLs. The estimated prices are between 40,000 and 95,000 euros (CHF 49,000 and 120,000).
The 600 from China
Three Mercedes Benz 600 limousines are looking for new owners at the Bonhams auction. These superlative vehicles always arouse great interest at auctions, as the auctions in Paris this year proved.
428 of the 2677 600s built are Pullman limousines, one of which was exported from Germany to China in 1965. There it served the Foreign Minister Chen Yi, a close ally of Mao Tse-tung. The plan was to use the car as a model for a Chinese luxury car. However, this did not come to pass, the car mainly stood around and then returned to Europe in 1993. Unrestored and with just over 21,000 km on the clock, it is now said to be worth 150,000 to 250,000 euros (CHF 180,000 to 300,000).
The two other 600s are slightly cheaper in the case of the second Pullman and significantly cheaper in the case of the normal saloon.
Interesting special bodies
Pre-war chassis from the Benz and Mercedes Benz brands also served as the basis for many a coachbuilder's creations. In Stuttgart, there are several 500/540Ks for sale and a 230 Cabriolet, which Hermann Graber built.
From almost new to very old
In the Bonhams auction on July 12, there are very old, but also almost new cars for sale, such as a Benz 45/60 HP from 1911, which is expected to fetch a seven-figure price, or a CL63 AMG from 2003, which is expected to fetch a five-figure price.
In between is the racing car in which Mika Hakkinen competed in the DTM in 2005. Collectors may also be interested in the Mercedes Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution from 1989, which was valued at between 25,000 and 30,000 euros.
And for those who want something even sportier, the "red sow", a Mercedes Benz 300 SEL 6.3, might be an option. However, this replica of the class winner at the Spa-Franchorchamps 24-hour race is said to cost between 160,000 and 210,000 euros. But for that you also get a current Tüv sticker and German H-registration papers, as well as a flap exhaust that can be adjusted from the interior.
And then, in addition to the Unimog 406 with double cab from 1976 already mentioned in the introduction, there is also a truck based on the Mercedes 10/25 HP from 1912.
It could hardly be more varied, considering that this is a one-stamp auction in Stuttgart.
More information on the auction conditions and the vehicles can be found on the Bonhams website.
