Owners of classic cars with veteran status benefit from a longer MOT inspection interval and, depending on the canton, lower road traffic taxes. Of course, the car must meet certain requirements for this. Gianni Santostefano, Head of Technical Centers at TCS Zurich, explains below what needs to be taken into account.
What requirements must the vehicle fulfill in order to receive the "veteran vehicle" entry?
The vehicle must have been on the market for at least 30 years. The vehicle must not be used regularly and only privately, and the annual mileage must be limited to an average of 2000 to 3000 kilometers or around 50 to 60 operating hours. The car must correspond to the original design. Conversions must be from the era of the vehicle. Your vehicle must be visually and technically in perfect condition and in above-average condition and maintenance. We accept signs of use that have occurred despite careful handling and good care. Repairs must be carried out professionally.
What does "in visually and technically perfect condition" mean?
The vehicle must not have any recognizable technical defects as defined by the statutory regulations. The paintwork should be in a tidy, unused condition. In addition, it must not have any bubbles or peeling. The chrome layer on chrome parts must not be chipped. The soft top must be tight and must not have any cracks. Likewise, the interior must not have any cracks or holes. Repairs must be carried out professionally.
How should rust repairs be carried out?
Rust repairs may only be carried out professionally (in accordance with ASA guideline 8), i.e. no multiple sheets welded on top of each other (patchwork). No rust repairs may be visible on the exterior bodywork.
When is a modification to the vehicle considered appropriate?
If the modification was demonstrably carried out on the vehicle in question during the normal period of use (ten to 15 years after it was first put on the market).
How are non-original rims handled?
For these too, proof must be provided that they were fitted and registered up to 15 years after the vehicle was first placed on the market.
Does the vehicle owner have to prove this?
Yes, the required evidence must be provided by the owner.
What is the situation if a DAB radio/CD player is retrofitted?
A more modern radio can be recognized. However, the equipment should not detract from the vehicle's appearance.
Is it permitted to retrofit daytime running lights to veteran vehicles?
No, retrofitting daytime running lights is an outdated modification. This will result in the veteran status being revoked.
Where can I find out whether my vehicle meets the veteran requirements?
You can book the "From Youngtimer to Oldtimer" test with TCS Zurich. The experts will check your vehicle and advise you on veteran status. Not all TCS sections can offer the veteran test. Please contact your section for more information: www.tcs.ch
