Motorsport fans have known it for a long time: twice a year, the "Roadbook" team organizes historic motorsport events at Spa-Francorchamps, with the one in autumn, called the "Spa Six Hours", usually being the most extensive. This year, the paddock seems to be bursting at the seams: Around 650 race cars are apparently registered and will compete in 12 race fields.
More than ten Ford GT40s on the grid
Looking at the twelve starting lists, it's almost dizzying. The focus is clearly on monoposti, prototypes, GTs and touring cars. The most extensive field is of course that of the 6-hour race, which is also clearly communicated in the name of the event(start list 6-hour race as PDF). Alain Defalle and Vincent Collard, the organizers of this brilliant motorsport spectacle, emphasize: "Our main work lies above all in making the individual vehicle fields as interesting and diverse as possible."
Well-known names at the wheel
It's not just the cars that are attractive, as there are also well-known names among the drivers: Kenny Bräck, winner of the "500 Miles of Indianapolis" in 1999, starts in a Ford GT40, Jan Lammers, Formula 1 racing driver and winner of the 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Silk-Cut Jaguar, starts in Spa in a Corvette Grand Sport. But today's active racing drivers will also be at the start, for example the multiple GT class winner Raymond Narac of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, registered with a Porsche 911.
Pre-1963 GT race with over 60 cars
The Woodcote Trophy and the Stirling Moss Trophy are also very impressive: over 60 vehicles are at the start here, all pre-1963 GT racing cars: Aston Martin Zagato, Ferrari 500 TRC or 246S, Maserati T61 Birdcage. Vehicles with an impressive history characterize the start list, such as the original Aston Martin DP212, which won the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans under Graham Hill. You will also discover a Triumph TR3 that competed in the 1957 12 Hours of Sebring ... And the list goes on. Impressive!
AC Cobras, Mustangs, prototypes and Can-Ams
While a number of AC Cobras are competing in the field of pre-1966 GT cars, rivals such as the Ford Mustang, Falcon and Galaxy are joining forces in the Trans-Atlantic Touring Car Trophy.
Prototypes such as the Porsche 917, Ferrari 512 and Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2 bring historic duels back to life and characterize the pearls in theFIA Masters Historic Sports Cars field.
Historic Formula 1 as it used to be in original paintwork
In addition to the impressive fields described so far, there is also a field of historic Formula 1 cars, and this should also attract many fans, as you don't see them that often: brands such as Lotus, Tyrrell, Brabham, Williams, Surtees, Ensign, Shadow, March, Hesketh, Penske, Trojan, Arrows and RAM appear in turn on the start list. The icing on the cake: they all start in their original livery!
