On May 13, 2016, Bonhams returns to Monaco with an exclusive offering of 40 exceptional motor vehicles. On offer will be the 1952 factory Jaguar C-Type XKC 011, which was driven by racing legend Sir Stirling Moss, among others.
"We are delighted to announce that in addition to the annual Monaco Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo Rally, the auction will now also take place in the glamorous principality on the Mediterranean and we have already been able to secure some incredible vehicles for the auction," says James Knight, Director of Bonhams Group Motoring.
The Jaguar C-Type XKC 011 of Sir Stirling Moss
The Jaguar C-Type XKC 011 from 1852 is certainly something special. This exceptional racing car, once driven as a works car by Sir Stirling Moss, is almost in its original condition.
The car was built for the Jaguar racing team in early 1952. After its racing debut, driven by racing legend Peter Walker at Silverstone in May of the same year, it was given a special aerodynamic body for the 24-hour race at Le Mans. At Le Mans, the car was driven by Stirling Moss and Peter Walker, but they did not reach the finish line.
The XKC 011 was then restored to its original condition and Moss and Walker competed together once again in the 1952 Goodwood 9 Hours, this time finishing the race in 5th place. Finally, Tony Rolt was victorious in this car at the Goodwood meeting in September 1952.
The following year, the car was also driven by Moss at the Mille Miglia and by Tommy Wisdom at the Targa Florio. The Palamres was finally extended with a 2nd place by Moss and a 4th in the final of the British Empire Trophy in Douglas.
Auction at the Fairmont Monte Carlo Hotel
