Changes in the framework conditions necessitated a revision of the school grade-based technical assessment of historic vehicles. The new version of the assessment principle now available is supplemented by a sample catalog consisting of twelve vehicles. On the part of the insurance industry, the classic car insurance company autosan CLASSIC was significantly involved in the development of both the new version and the sample catalog.
Special rating for special classic cars
For some years now, classic cars in a particularly original material condition have experienced a significant increase in appreciation. As a result, condition grades and monetary values no longer correlate automatically. For example, it seems possible that a particularly original vehicle in technical condition 3 can achieve a higher price than a comparable, completely renovated grade 1 vehicle.
In the classic car scene, this has led to irritation and calls for alternative valuation principles. The Parliamentary Group on Automotive Cultural Property in the German Bundestag (PAK) took up these demands and commissioned an internal working group to find a solution that would satisfy all parties involved.
New with an exclamation mark
The new version of the evaluation principle now available retains the school grades 5 to 1. On the other hand, in the rare case of a particularly original material condition, it is recommended to describe this in detail in words and pictures, to use the so-called long expert opinion for this and to follow the condition grade with an exclamation mark. The latter is an initial, external indication and an incentive to take a closer look at the report.
In order to prevent misunderstandings regarding the particularly original material condition, the new version is supplemented by a catalog with twelve example vehicles. These include four motorcycles, six cars, a truck and a tractor built between 1914 and 1990.
The new version and sample catalog will be published as a joint PDF document, free of charge and downloadable, primarily on the websites of the companies active in the working group: Testing organization TÜV SÜD ClassiC, market observer Classic Data, restoration company Omnia and classic car insurance company autosan CLASSIC.
