With the "30 Years of the BMW M5" exhibition, Retro Classics 2015 looks back on a more recent chapter in German automotive history. The M5 is one of the automotive icons of the 1980s: at the 1984 Amsterdam Motor Show, BMW presented a really fast 5 Series for the first time, a model that hardly differed externally from the "normal" 520 saloon.
Under the hood, however, pulsated a 3.5-liter engine from the road-going version of the BMW M1. From 1985 onwards, the 286 hp variant was initially produced by hand - the stuff of dreams and legends. At Retro Classics 2015, a special show will be dedicated to this milestone in German automotive and design history (Hall 4, Stands A51 and A53).
The beginning of a success story
When BMW presented its "5 Series" in 1972, it marked the beginning of a success story for the traditional Munich-based company: with its clear lines, the car quickly made friends with sporty drivers who did not want to do without the travel comfort of a comfortable mid-range car. As the decade progressed, the BMW 5 Series became synonymous with upmarket driving pleasure.
Shortly after the introduction of the E34 series, the second M5 model was launched in 1988, which once again impressed with its skillful balance between power, comfort and elegance. Today, the M5 is an eternally young classic. To celebrate its 30th birthday, BMW presents a new model with 600 hp.
In the temporal context of the model range
The special exhibition "30 years of the BMW M5" presented by the Albstadt dealership Revo not only aims to show the development of the M5, but also to place the vehicle in the chronological context of the model range. In addition to M5 models from various decades and model series, other BMW M models from the first generation are therefore on display, such as an M635csi E24 Coupé or a rare M3 E30 Convertible. Christoph Zerbini, organizer of the show, on the fascination of the M5: "The M5 from 1984 was the first saloon with a sports car engine - and thus the founder of a completely new type of vehicle!"
Retro Classics will take place from March 26 to 29, 2015 at the Stuttgart exhibition grounds.
