RM/Sotheby's are once again aiming for a record sum (after last winter's successful event): the auction of just 31 cars on December 10 is expected to raise around USD 100 million, a whopping USD 3.3 million (EUR 3 million, CHF 3.3 million) per vehicle on offer.
Fangio's Mille Miglia Ferrari
The most expensive car on the lot list is a 1956Ferrari 290 MM , in which Fangio competed in the 1956 Mille Miglia and finished fourth.
Completely restored and of course "Ferrari Classiche certified", the sports car is now said to be worth USD 28 to 32 million (Euro 26 to 30 million, CHF 28 to 32 million).
The second most expensive car in the auction is Lot 215, a 1962 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, the 14th of 19 original GTZs built. Originally delivered to Australia, the car has a racing history, has been completely restored and has also appeared at various European and American concours. Whether this is enough to justify the USD 15 to 17 million (EUR 14 to 16 million, CHF 15 to 17 million) remains to be seen.
Super classics
Of course, the super classics, which can be found at almost every international auction, are not missing in New York either.
The financially strong bidder can purchase a Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring from 1973 (USD 900,000 to 1.1 million), a Ferrari Daytona from 1973 (USD 800,000 to 1 million), a Lamborghini Countach LP400 S from 1981 (USD 900,000 to 1.1 million), a Lambroghini Miura P400 SV from 1972 (USD 2.2 to 2.6 million), but also a Jaguar E-Type Series 1 4.2 Roadster from 1965 (USD 250,000 to 325,000).
However, if you want something a little more unusual, you might prefer the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing from 1955, which the sports department made available to Stirling Moss for the Tour de France at the time, making it worth USD 5 to 7 million according to RM.
Newer vintages
Youngtimer and neoclassic fans will also find plenty to buy in New York, such as the 1986 Ford RS200 with low mileage, which is now expected to go for USD 450,000 to 550,000, and the 1991 Ferrari Testarossa, which with less than 300 km on the clock is now expected to fetch a top bid in the USD 400,000 to 500,000 range.
Even more expensive, but with a few hundred kilometers more on the clock, is the Ferrari Enzo from 2003, which the RM experts estimated at USD 3 to 3.5 million.
And if that's not rare enough for you, you might want to hold up your bidding paddle for the Lamborghini Concept S from 2006 (USD 2.4 to 3 million).
Records?
It smells like new auction records when you leaf through the catalog. A 1981 BMW M1 with 682 kilometers on the clock was estimated at USD 800,000 to 1 million.
And an early Porsche 930 Turbo in the special color copper brown wants to find a completely restored new owner for USD 350,000 to 450,000.
USD 700,000 to 850,000 was set for an early Dino 206 GT from 1969.
Exotics
In addition to the auction classics, there are also some vehicles for sale in New York that you don't find every day at auctions, such as the Ferrari 212 Inter Vignalefrom 1953 (USD 2 to 2 million), the unrestored Ferrari 500 Mondial from 1955 (SUD 5 to 6.5 million), the Siata 208S Spider from 1954 (USD 1.5 to 1.9 million), the Delage D8 S convertible by Fernandez et Darrin from 1935 (USD 1.3 to 1.6 million), the Ferrari 250 Europa Vignale from 1953 (USD 3.8 to 4.5 million) or the Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow from 1933, a pioneering aerodynamic achievement for USD 2.5 to 3 million.USD 2.5 to 3 million.
Pegaso fans will be eyeing the 1954 Z-102 3.2 Touring, estimated at USD 800,000b to 1 million, while Pininfarina devotees will be eyeing the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT convertible for USD 6 to 7.5 million.
Without a big wallet, a flight to the RM/Sotheby's auction in New York will hardly be worthwhile, but whether the bidders are as generous as the auction house expects will be revealed on December 10, 2015.
Further information and pictures of the auction can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
