RM/Sotheby's had originally planned to hold a traditional auction on the occasion of the London-Brighton Race on the weekend of October 31, 2020, but after the event was canceled, the only option was to move forward. RM opted for an online auction. 65 vehicles, including two tractors, will go under the virtual hammer alongside a boat and some automobilia between October 26 and 31, 2020.
Wide range on offer
RM is offering 65 vehicles (including the two tractors) with an average age of 42.5 years in the London online auction. 25 brands are represented, with Ferrari (with 11 cars), Mercedes-Benz (8), Porsche (6) and Maserati and Aston Martin with 4 cars each.
At the other end of the spectrum, there are brands such as AC, Jensen and Renault, which only compete with one car.
Each vehicle is expected to sell for an average of around £257,000, with all 62 cars and the two Lamborghini tractors together estimated at around £16.5 million.
Special one-offs
We would like to highlight two vehicles in particular, as they alone are worth a second look at the auction.
The first is the Jensen C-V8 Drophead Coupé from 1965, a one-off that was built on the extended wheelbase of the C-V8 Mk II but never went into series production. The car was then sold and survived.
An estimate for chassis JM-EXP-108 is not given, but you can certainly expect a healthy six-figure sum.
The Lancia Fulvia HF Competizione was presented by Ghia at the 1969 Geneva Motor Show. As a special feature, it had a retractable baffle plate at the rear. The wedge-shaped body has nothing in common with the normal Fulvia. An estimate of £ 140,000 to £ 180,000 is given.
The special E-Type
Early E-Types are particularly sought-after. Chassis 860010 is the tenth series-produced car, i.e. a flat floor 3.8-liter coupé from 1961.
The car served as a press vehicle and was driven by Fritz B. Busch, among others, for Auto Motor und Sport at the time. Now fully restored by JD Classics, the car is said to cost an impressive £395,000 to £495,000.
The F40 of Gerhard Berger
There are probably only a few Ferrari F40s that have been driven by a Grand Prix driver. Lot 135 belongs to Gerhard Berger and can now be purchased for between £900,000 and £1.1 million.
The mileage is given as around 30,000 km, the color is said to be original, as is the interior. Only the suspensions have been adjusted and are no longer adjustable.
A rare auction guest
As is well known, the Renault Sport Spider celebrated its 25th birthday this year. So far, it has been a rarely seen guest at auctions.
RM/Sotheby's can offer a blue example, estimated at £ 25,000 to £ 35,000, which will go under the hammer without a reserve price (like 17 percent of the cars on offer).
A Panhard-Levassor
In keeping with the London-Brighton theme, a car with a chance of starting will also be sold, a Panhard & Levassor 7 HP Rear Entrance Tonneau from 1902.
Chassis 3155 was estimated at £170,000 to £200,000 and is of course the oldest car on offer.
Many super classics
In addition to the cars already mentioned, there is a whole bunch of super classics up for auction at the end of October.
Whether Porsche 356 Carrera 1500 GS Speedster from 1955 (£ 1.1 to 1.3 million), Aston Martin DB5 from 1965 (£ 375,000 to 425,000) or Ferrari 330 GTC from 1968 (£ 400,000 to 450,000), the choice is vast.
There is also a Lamborghini Countach, a Maserati 3500 GT and a Mercedes-Benz 300 S Roadster from 1953.
And a Fiat 131 Abarth Rallye from 1980 can certainly be counted among the super classics today, just like the BMW Z8.
A look at the RM/Sotheby's website shows the cars in detail and with many pictures.
