The "Open Road Online Only" format has already become established at the RM/Sotheby's auction house. The cars on offer are mainly in the mid-price segment from various markets around the world and are bid for via the Internet or by written contact. There is no hammer-wielding auctioneer, but the auction runs for around a week.
From March 17 to 25, 2021, RM/Sotheby's will be offering a total of 95 automobiles in this way, which together are worth just under EUR 8.5 million. An average of around EUR 89,000 is therefore expected per lot. 17% of the vehicles, which are 39 years old on average, will be sold without a minimum bid.
33 brands
Cars from 33 different brands will go under the virtual hammer. Porsche is the most strongly represented, with 21 sports cars from Zuffenhausen making up over a fifth of the offer. All other manufacturers are represented in single figures at most, with Ferrari (9), Alfa Romeo (7) and BMW (5) being the most visible.
There are hardly any real exotics, apart from the Qvale Mangusta or the Griffith 200, which was basically a TVR.
Lots of neoclassics and youngtimers ...
Almost 40 of the cars were built after 1991, so they are either youngtimers or "neoclassics".
These include an Audi TT from 2005 as well as a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray from 2020 with a mid-engine.
Many of the most expensive cars are in this segment and often with the Porsche badge, such as the 911 GT2 RS "Weissach" from 2018 for EUR 300,000 to 350,000.
But there are also cheap offers like a Fiat Barchetta from 1998 or a Peugeot 106 GTI S16 from 1999.
... but only two pre-war cars
In contrast, the range of vehicles built before 1945 is thin on the ground.
There are exactly two and both are from the Packard brand.
Some restoration offers
For people who are still looking for a project, the various restoration objects could be interesting.
From the Griffith 200 from 1965 (USD 35,000 to 50,000!) to a Mercury Comet Cyclone "R-Code" from 1967, a Triumph TR6 from 1976, a Ford Mustang 429 Boss from 1969 and a Porsche 356 from 1953 (USD 50,000 to 60,000), an enormous range is on offer.
But it's not going to be cheap, especially when you add transportation costs and the surcharge. And with the Griffith 200, for example, restoration costs of a good EUR 100,000 to 200,000 are likely to be added.
The Ferrari 250 GTE from 1963, however, seems to be valued at USD 20,000 to 30,000 at first glance, but this is only a bodywork ...
Truck with racing car
If you want to fully equip yourself for the coming racing season, ....
... should take a look at the Plymouth Barracuda quarter-mile car and Dodge van, which together were estimated at USD 50,000 to 60,000.
Two interesting Alfa limousines
Classic car buyers like to go for coupés and convertibles,
RM can also offer two exciting Alfa saloons. There is the Alfa 1900 from 1952, which should find a new garage for EUR 50,000 to 55,000.
And then there is also one of the rare Alfa Romeo Giulia TI Super from 1964 up for auction, although it is also sailing in thin air at EUR 175,000 to 185,000.
This would make it even more expensive than a Maserati Sebring from 1966 (EUR 100,000 to 140,000) or almost as expensive as a De Tomaso Mangusta from 1970 (EUR 180,000 to 200,000).
One of the few Porsche 356 B Carrera 2
One of the most expensive cars in the auction is a Porsche 356 B Carrera 2 from 1962. EUR 390,000 to 460,000 is expected for the car with chassis number 120479.
Only 445 examples were produced and this car was delivered new in France and extensively restored. The last owner remained loyal to it for 20 years.
