It is certainly not every day that cars from American Motors Corporation are the most represented at a classic car auction, or at least appear in the catalog as frequently as BMW, Chevrolet and Mercedes-Benz. At RM/Sotheby's, this is exactly what will happen when 67 vehicles, including two tractors and three motorcycles, go under the hammer virtually between April 21 and 29, 2021.
Super classics are the exception rather than the rule, as the average price of a vehicle is "only" USD 81,800. The vehicles are offered in three different currencies (EUR, GBP, USD), depending on the country from which they were consigned. Accordingly, buyers must also collect their purchased car in that country. Vehicles from the USA account for the largest share. On average, the vehicles are 45.6 years old, and a quarter are sold without a minimum price.
The almost complete AMC collection?
Anyone who has ever thought about building up an AMC collection could make a good start at the Open Roads auction for around a quarter of a million USD. On offer are a 1974 Javelin AMX, an AMX California 500 Special, a Hornet, a Gremlin and a Spirt AMX.
This covers an extensive part of the construction program of the sixties and seventies.
Why not a replica?
If you're less interested in blue-chip investments and more in driving pleasure, you might also be happy with a 1966 Jaguar C-Type replica for GBP 55,000 to 75,000. It may not be an original, but the car looks snazzy and certainly runs almost as fast as the sports cars assembled in Coventry. It is also interesting to note that the Proteus C-Type is a very early car, which was probably built in the 1980s on the basis of an MK II with a 3.8-liter engine.
Alternatively, there is also a Porsche 550 Spyder as a replica from 1957 in the program, here USD 40,000 to 50,000 is enough for very open driving fun.
Exotic
The Nash-Healey Coupé was only dressed by Pinin Farina for one year and 62 times. Chassis 3048 is said to be one of around 30 surviving coupés that were 25 cm longer than the convertible variants.
Although no longer in its original condition, this coupé appears to be an interesting purchase for USD 75,000 to 90,000.
The Intermeccanica Indra Coupé from 1972 is also rare. Chassis 91003414 appears to be one of only around 40 notchback coupés built and comes with a Chevrolet 327 V8 and automatic transmission. The car has a German history and was estimated at EUR 40'000 to 50'000.
The aerodynamic ones from Citroën
Normally, Citroën ID19/DS19 convertibles cost a lot of money. However, the 1969 ID19 on offer with chassis number 8165059 is not supposed to be a factory convertible, but a conversion by Tissere.
At EUR 55,000 to 75,000, the car is reasonably priced and the driving pleasure is unlikely to be less than in a Chapron version.
For Citroën fans, there is also an alternative, namely a 1972 SM, which has been estimated at USD 50,000 to 60,000, despite a great deal of investment in its restoration.
Many young cars
Around a quarter of the cars are not yet classic cars, including an early Lotus Elise from 1997, for example, but also a BMW 750 iL from 1999, in which you can almost feel like James Bond.
Most of the very expensive cars come from the youthful segment, including a Ford GT from 2006, but also a Lamborghini Gallardo or an almost new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray from 2020. The Aston Martin Rapide S from 2014 is also one of the very young cars, but is being offered for far less than the original price at the time.
Further information and many pictures can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
