For the first time, RM/Sotheby's is holding an auction at the Petersen Auto Museum in Los Angeles on December 8, 2018. The new auction is intended to be a counterpart to the New York auction held every other year.
69 vehicles, including some motorcycles and automobilia, will go under the hammer, with the total value of the vehicles estimated at USD 47.5 million. The highest bidders are expected to pay an average of around USD 700,000 (EUR 615,000) per vehicle.
The Ferrari 290 MM with 4 and 12 cylinders
The highlight of the auction is undoubtedly the Ferrari 290 MM from 1956, which will be the last car to go under the hammer on December 8, 2018. Some of the most famous racing drivers of all time sat behind the wheel of this factory racing car with chassis number 0628, including Stirling Moss, Peter Collins, Alfonso de Portago, Phil Hill and Wolfgang Von Trips.
Both four and twelve-cylinder engines were at work under the hood. The Palmares includes podium finishes at the Mille Miglia, the 1000 km of Buenos Aires and victory at the Nassau Trophy.
Completely restored, the car is offered in the condition in which it started at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1957.
At USD 22 to 26 million, the bar is set high and only telephone bidders and people on site can place their bids.
Ferrari, Porsche and others
11 Ferraris and 9 Porsches together make up almost a third of the offer.
Other brands have to make themselves correspondingly small: Mercedes-Benz is represented with four cars, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Ford, Honda and Lamborghini with three each.
The rest of the lot list is mainly made up of individual manufacturers such as Alfa Romeo, Austin-Healey, Dodge and Volkswagen.
Small exotics
RM/Sotheby's has found a whole series of rare small cars for the December auction.
These include the Mochet CM-125 Luxe from 1954, a Messerschmitt KR 200 Roadster from 1964 and a Paul Vallée Chantecler from 1956.
The Rolux VB60 'Baby' from 1950, which was also originally announced, has already been withdrawn.
Custom cars
For fans of American creativity, the Ed Roth "Mysterion" from 1962 as a recreation, the Ford "Lloyd Bakan" Coupé from 1932 or the Mercury as a custom coupé by Rudy Rodriguez from 1940 should be of interest. Other such cars can be found on the lot list.
However, at least six-figure sums must be invested.
Superclassics
Of course, there are many super classics up for auction in Los Angeles. These include a Lamborghini Miura P400 SV from 1971 (USD 2.1 to 2.5 million), a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing from 1955 (USD 1.2 to 1.4 million) and a Porsche 959 Komfort from 1987 (USD 950,000 to 1.1 million).
The neo-classics include the Porsche 918 from 2015 (USD 1.5 to 1.7 million), the McLaren P1 from 2015 (USD 1.3 to 1.7 million) and the Porsche Carrera GT from 2005 (USD 700,000 to 900,000).
Rarely seen at auction is (still) the Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Villa d'Este from 12018 (USD 600,000 to 800,000).
Little for the small purse
Although there are some vehicles for less money, the majority of cars cost at least six figures. Exceptions include the VW Beetle from 1959 (USD 25,000 to 30,000), the Porsche 944 Turbo from 1986 (USD 25,000 to 30,000) and the Acura NSX from 1991 (USD 90,000 to 110,000). There are also several motorcycles and scooters for sale.
The variety in the Petersen Auto Museum is great, but real bargains are hardly to be expected, even though 46 percent of the vehicle lots are offered without a minimum price.
Further information and lots of pictures can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
