RM/Sotheby's will be auctioning 108 vehicles and some automobilia, including a Coventry Climax engine, from February 19 to 28, 2021. That in itself would not be unusual. What is certainly special is that the auction is only taking place online and the vehicles are spread across half the globe.
As a result, interested parties can bid on cars that can be collected in the USA, Europe or Abu Dhabi. Lots up to 150 tend to come from European consignors, 200 to 262 were registered in the USA and from 301 a Swiss Porsche new classic collection comes under the hammer. Around a quarter of the vehicles are offered without a reserve price.
The 108 vehicles are on average a good 41 years old, including a few tractors and a motorcycle. The largest brand contingent comes from Porsche, followed by Chevrolet, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, Ford and Alfa Romeo. This also shows that this is an unusual collection of consignments.
The spectrum is broad and ranges from super classics to used cars, including a Fiat Coupé 2.0 16V Turbo from 1995, an Aston Martin Vantage Le Mans V600 from 2000 and a Packard 2-25 Twin Six Runabout from 1917.
The fastest Ferrari 250 GTE?
The Ferrari 250 GTE with chassis number 3723 GT from 1962 is certainly also unusual. The black coupé belonged to Jay Kay, the founder of the music group Jamiroquai, among others, and a lot of money was invested in it.
The car was improved with a 320 hp Colombo V12, so that the car is rightly called a "hot rod".
Visually, you can't tell how powerful it is; an estimated price of USD 675,000 to 725,000 was given. At least you also get the original engine.
Diego Maradona's BMW i8
The famous and now deceased footballer Diego Maradona owned a BMW i8 from 2014, delivered to "Middle-East" specifications. The white mid-engine hybrid sports car has covered just 10,500 km, is already second-hand and was estimated at EUR 60,000 to 80,000. It would have to be collected in Dubai.
The i8 is one of four BMWs, none of them older than 33 years. After all, the BMW M6 from 1988 is already a classic car; the coupé with M1 engine is expected to cost between EUR 41,000 and 61,500.
A BMW (Z3) M Coupé from 1998, which is estimated at EUR 45,000 to 55,000, is likely to be somewhat cheaper.
The youngest car of the four BMWs is an M2 CS from 2020, which was estimated at EUR 75,000 to 110,000.
Alfa rarities ...
When you think of Alfa classics at auction, the Montreal, the Bertone or perhaps the Zagato specialties RZ/SZ come to mind. However, the offer at RM looks completely different, as an Alfasud, an Alfa 33 and an Alfa Romeo 147 are on offer, supplemented by a GTV6 2.5 from 1984.
The latter is a Group A version of Autodelta, prepared for use in rally sport.
Even more special, however, is the twin-engined Alfasud from 1974, to which tuner Wainer added a second engine via the rear axle in 1977, thus doubling the power and the number of driven wheels. However, EUR 80,000 to 120,000 is a hefty estimate for this experimental car.
The 147 GTA from 2003 would be considerably cheaper, as EUR 20,000 to 30,000 should be enough for the front-wheel drive car with the famous Alfa V6 Busso engine.
The Alfa 33 1.5 4x4 Sport Wagon from 1988 is even cheaper, with just under EUR 10,000 likely to be enough.
... and other special Italians
Although the Alfas are exceptional, the list of Italian exotics is much longer. For example, a Cisitalia 202 SC Cabriolet rarely comes under the hammer. Chassis 118 SC from 1950 is one of around 60 examples built. The car on offer was probably fitted by Vignale, has the 1.1-liter 60 hp engine with Fiat roots under the hood and has already driven in Uruguay, Italy, Austria and Germany, among other countries.
The consignor now expects EUR 400,000 to 450,000 for this rarity.
One of the rare Lancia Hyena Zagato from 1994 is somewhat less expensive, but hardly less exotic. The green car with chassis number ZLA831AB000579320 was estimated at EUR 160,000 to 200,000 and is the 15th of 24 examples built.
The Porsche collection from Switzerland
The last seven lots are all new Porsche classics from a Swiss collection.
There is actually almost everything a Porsche collector who prefers modern cars could dream of, such as a yellow Porsche Carrera GT from 2005 (CHF 775,000 to 825,000), a 918 Spyder from 2015 (CHF 975,000 to 1.1 million) or a 911 Sport Classic from 2010 (CHF 310,000 to 350,000).
They did not travel far, especially the newer models remained in the four-digit kilometer range.
