RM/Sotheby's will be putting 30 cars, a motorcycle and the starting flag from the 2000 24 Hours of Le Mans under the hammer at the Concours of Elegance Germany on July 27, 2024 at Lake Tegernsee.
Together, the vehicles were estimated at over EUR 30 million, so around one million is expected per car. Two lots, the motorcycle and a Porsche 911 Speedster from 1989, will be offered without a reserve price.
On average, the vehicles are relatively young, namely 35 years old. In fact, half of the cars were built after 2000.
With seven Porsches and six Ferraris, half of the range is already defined; the Porsches are on average 36 years old, the Ferraris 28.
The Porsche 550 Spyder
The most expensive car in the auction is a Porsche 550 Spyder with chassis number 0038 from 1955. The mid-engined racing sports car delivered to Portugal in white is said to have been spotted on various racetracks at the time and was later completely restored in the 1990s.
The Porsche has not been driven since the restoration and the engine has not been started for at least 10 years according to the catalog description. The engine, gearbox and chassis are obviously original, but the color of the body has changed to silver.
The estimate is EUR 3.5 to 4.2 million.
However, this makes the 550 Spyder only just the most valuable car in the auction, as a Bugatti Chrion from 2019 and a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss from 2010 are valued at almost the same price.
Aston Martin with Le Mans history
In 1935, an Aston Martin Ulster finished the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 15th place overall. It was chassis F4/447/S, one of only 31 Ulster two-seaters.
The Aston was restored from 2007 to 2008, retaining its original 1.5-liter engine. In 2009, the car took part in the Mille Miglia, and EUR 1 to 1.3 million is now expected to change hands for it.
The second Aston Martin in the auction is expected to fetch even more. It is one of only 37 short chassis DB Volange built on the basis of the DB5. Estimates range from EUR 1 to 1.4 million.
Two beauties from the coachbuilder
Jean Barou dressed just one Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport. The result impresses with elegance and lightness. Chassis 110107 has only covered 2000 km in over 25 years and has therefore rarely been seen; the car is certainly a concours candidate.
However, EUR 1.4 to 1.6 million is expected before the next stake.
The Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport Coupé from 1949, which was given its sporty design by Carrrozzeria Touring, also comes from the sheet metal artist. The chassis and engine still bear the original numbers. The estimate is given as EUR 530,000 to 700,000.
The other Alfa Romeo in the auction is of a completely different caliber, namely Christian Danner's race car in the 1994 DTM season. The 155 V6 TI DTM is now looking for a new racing driver owner for EUR 650,000 to 700,000.
Italian Granturismi
Two Italian super-class sports cars with front engines date from the same year.
Despite a similar design with 12 cylinders, they are quite different. And while the Ferrari 275 GTB/6C is said to cost EUR 2.5 to 3 million, you can buy the Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 for as little as EUR 350,000 to 450,000.
The Dino 246 GTS from 1973, which is listed at EUR 300,000 to 400,000, is somewhat younger but also very attractive.
