To say that Jean Guikas is a car enthusiast would almost be an understatement. At the age of just over 10, he spotted a Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona on the roads of southern France in the early 1970s and was immediately hooked. His father was obviously quite happy with this enthusiasm, because he searched for the owner of the blue Daytona and put it in his garage. The basis for his son's lifelong enthusiasm for cars was guaranteed.
This was also demonstrated when Jean Guikas bought a Ferrari 250 GT PF Coupé at the age of 19, which was soon followed by a racing Daytona. Guikas quickly became enthusiastic about fast racing cars and joined the family company at a young age. In 1989, he sold his shares and was now able to devote himself to his passion. He founded the company GTC and began trading in high-quality classic cars. He probably kept some of them and 76 of these cars will now go under the hammer at the Le Castellet race track on November 19, 2021.
The total value of the vehicles has been estimated at just over 50 million, so each car is expected to fetch EUR 664,605. All cars will be auctioned with no reserve price!
Racing cars and classics
Around thirty percent of the cars on offer are racing cars, with the remainder split between super classics and some less glamorous classic cars. The average age of the vehicles is just over 45 years.
The most represented brand is (of course) Ferrari with 19 vehicles, followed by Jaguar (5), Maserati (5), Porsche and Alfa Romeo (4 each). A total of 32 brands are represented, including many that are only known from racing car construction, such as TOJ, Prost, Lola and Arrows.
The Le Mans Renault Alpine
Only four Renault-Alpine A442s were built, the racing car on offer with chassis 4422 took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1977 and 1978 and is the only car in private ownership.
At EUR 4 to 5 million, however, this exclusivity should also be valued accordingly.
Special bodies on French and British chassis
Although Guikas had a preference for fast sports and racing cars, often of Italian provenance, he also bought several Delahaye 135 M/MS with special bodies by Saoutchik, Antem and Pourtout.
These come under the hammer at prices between EUR 175,000 and 700,000.
They are complemented by a 1933 Delage D8 S Cabriolet Pourtout, the oldest car in the auction and estimated at EUR 1 to 1.4 million.
The 1966 Jaguar FT Coupé is also almost a one-off, with only one other example in existence. The asking price of EUR 80,000 to 100,000 therefore seems almost reasonable.
And for the Frua prototype of a Maserati Quattroporte II from 1971, the RM experts set a value of EUR 180,000 to 220,000.
Super sports cars of the sixties to eighties
Fast sports cars were Guika's passion, so it's no wonder that two Lamborghini Countach, two Maserati Ghibli, two Jaguar E-Types Series 1 Roadster and several others are coming under the hammer.
The largest proportion, however, is made up of Ferrari sports cars, including two Berlinetta Boxers (365 and 512), a Dino 206 GT, a 275 GTB, a 365 GTB/4 Daytona "Plexi" from 1969 and the two most expensive cars in the auction, a Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series 1 from 1958 (EUR 5.5 to 7 million) and a 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione from 1955 (EUR 7 to 9 million), which is being offered to the public for the first time in decades.
Special racing cars
The range of racing cars on offer, from the Abarth-Simca 1300 GT Coupé from 1963 (EUR 350,000 to 450,000) to the TOJ SC304 from 1976 (EUR 675,000 to 800,000), is bursting with raisins and specialties.
The Arros A11B Formula 1 from 1990 (EUR 100,000 to 140,000), which Michele Alboreto drove at the time, is worth mentioning.
Another rarity is the March 771 from 1997, driven by Ian Scheckter in Canada and probably one of only two examples built (EUR 300,000 to 375,000).
The Lola T70 Mk III from 1967 is considered one of the most beautiful racing cars of the period and only new ones were built at that time. The car with Swedish and American racing history can be bought for EUR 650,000 to 800,000.
Young BMW and more affordable cars
One of the youngest cars in the collection is a BMW M3 CSL (E46) from 2003, with SMG and first-hand. With 78,000 km on the clock, the car is now expected to fetch EUR 75,000 to 100,000.
This makes it one of the cheapest cars, with only 10 cars receiving even lower estimates, including an Autobianchi 500 Giardinera from 1975 (EUR 10,000 to 15,000) and a Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16V from 1987 (EUR 20,000 to 30,000).
The estimated values largely correspond to the current market situation and it will be interesting to see how bidders react to this exceptional collection on November 19, 2021.
