RM/Sotheby's traditionally opens the Rétromobile auction week on Wednesday, February 5, 2020. As usual, the cars will be presented tightly parked in a tent on Place Vauban and then go under the hammer between the two "parking lots".
Worth millions
79 cars are looking for a new owner in Paris, together they are worth EUR 39.4 million (CHF 42.1 million). This means that almost EUR 500,000 (CHF 533,000) is expected per vehicle, no mean feat. Not quite a third of the cars will be offered without a reserve price.
At the right age
On average, the 79 cars are 47 years old, which already indicates a wide range of vehicles on offer. After all, 29 brands are represented, if you exclude Dino and Ferrari, which together make up the largest contingent with 13 sports cars, while Mercedes-Benz has 12 cars.
The rarer brands include Dyna-Veritas, Iso, Isotta Fraschini and Moretti, while "SS" can probably still be counted among the 8 Jaguars.
Contrasts
The ten most expensive cars show just how broad the spectrum is.
Lot 171 is a 1955 Jaguar D-Type, which was estimated at EUR 5.9 to 6.4 million.
Exactly 60 years younger is Lot 153, a Lamborghini Veneno Roadster from 2015, which is hoping for bids of EUR 4.5 to 5.5 million.
Lot 168 is the perfect fair-weather sports car, a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider with chassis number 15535, making it one of only 19 European LHD convertibles and now expected to be worth EUR 2.4 to 2.6 million.
One of the most beautiful sports cars of the 1950s, the BMW 507 from 1958 (chassis 70134), is said to be somewhat cheaper. The white convertible should be worth EUR 1.75 to 2.25 million to its new owner.
The Porsche 904 GTS from 1964 is faster and significantly lighter thanks to its plastic skin, but it will probably not be much cheaper. The road-going racing car is expected to cost the current owner between EUR 1.6 and 1.8 million.
Once again, we arrive in modern times with the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport from 2012, which is listed in the catalog with an estimate of EUR million 1.2 to 1.8 (big difference!).
Two pre-war sports cars and two Mercedes-Benz 300 SLs round off the top ten.
Many super classics
It is rare to find such a dense sixties to eighties sports car program at a single auction. This is certainly partly due to the "Poster Car Collection" on offer.
With Jaguar E-Type, Maserati Sebring, Aston Martin DB5, Iso Grifo, Ferrari Daytona, Maserati Ghibli, Dino 246 GT/GTS, Ferrari 512 BB and several other icons, the range is certainly worth seeing for sports car fans.
Over a hundred years old
The fact that RM/Sotheby's also has an eye for unorthodox classics is shown, for example, by the 1913 Hispano-Suiza Alfonso XIII, the older car in the auction EUR 650,000 to 900,000 was used as the value, which can perhaps also be underlined by the fact that this Hispano can be considered the first production sports car.
In addition, the chassis 2192 is said to still contain the original engine.
The next generation
Once again, RM/Sotheby's is also showing interest in the next generation of collectors.
Although the Honda NSX from 1991 will soon be a classic car, it still looks youthfully fresh and is now expected to cost EUR 50,000 to 60,000 painted in the less common silver (no minimum price).
The BMW Z8 is one of the less recent classics that has never really lost value. However, EUR 200,000 to 250,000 is probably at the upper limit of what buyers today are willing to pay for this not-so-rare neoclassic.
Rare and therefore certainly interesting is the Porsche 911 GT3 RS Clubsport from 2005, for which EUR 225,000 to 275,000 has been set.
And for Bond fans, it could be an Aston Martin Vanquish ("Aston calls it the 'Vanquish', we named it the 'Vanish'" - Q.). S from 2007, which is expected to fetch EUR 130,000 to 160,000.
The second youngest car in the auction is a 2017 Nissan GT-R Nismo, estimated at EUR 140,000 to 160,000.
The offer is therefore as broad as ever, whether it is interesting enough in view of the well-positioned competition in Paris will be seen on the evening of February 5, 2020.
Many pictures and detailed descriptions of the individual cars can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
