The new auction season has already started. On 25 January 2024, RM/Sotheby's is organizing the 2024 inaugural event in Arizona. There will be 85 vehicles on offer with a total value of around USD 44.9 million. An average of USD 528,000 per car is therefore expected. 51% of the cars will go under the hammer without a reserve price.
Mainly Europeans and Americans
Nine Ferrari and Porsche, seven Shelby, six Ford, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz as well as five Chevrolet make up more than half of the offer, all other brands are represented with lower numbers, some exotics such as American Bantam, Ghia or Spyker, as expected, with only one vehicle.
The average age is around 48 years, although the vehicles from Ford (predominantly GT models) and Porsche in particular are significantly younger at 29 and 31 years. With 12 cars, the pre-war fraction is better represented than elsewhere.
The highlight here is a Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster from 1938, which is looking for a new owner for USD 1.75 to 2.25 million, but is on offer with no reserve price.
The young cars are the most expensive
However, neither pre-war classics nor cars from the sixties or seventies are the most valuable, with this honor going to two almost-new cars, namely a McLaren Speedtail from 2020 (USD 2 to 2.5 million) and a Porsche 918 Spyder from 2015 (USD 1.9 to 2.2 million).
Few five-figure offers
Only six cars are expected with prices under USD 100,000, including an attractively presented American Bantam Roadster from 1939 for USD 25,000 to 35,000.
An Amphicar 770 from 1962 or a Toyota FJ45 Land Cruiser were also valued at six-figure sums.
Super classic festival
The range of so-called "blue chip" classics on offer at RM in Arizona is large.
Among other things an Aston Martin DB5 from 1965, an Aston Martin DB Short Chassis Volante from 1965, an Audi Sport quattro from 1984, several Chevrolet Corvettes, a Ferrari 250 GT Lusso from 1963, a Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet from 1961, a Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona from 1972, a Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 from 1966, a particularly rare Lamborghini 350 GT from 1965 with aluminum bodywork (USD 600'000 to 750,000), a Mercedes-Benz 300 Sc Coupé from 1956, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing from 1955 or a Porsche 959 from 1987.
Shelby Potpurri
The Shelby range at RM is extensive, with two Cobras, three GT350s, a GT500 and a "Series 1" from 1999 among the seven cars on offer.
Some of the estimated values clearly exceed the million threshold.
Bodywork
The RM also includes special bodywork.
These include a Bentley Mk VI Cabriolet by Graber from 1952 (USD 125,000 to 175,000), an Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport "Villa d'Este" by Touring from 1950 (USD 450,000 to 550,000) and a Bugatti Type 57 convertible by Letourneur et Marchand from 1939 (USD 900,000 to 1.2 million) under the hammer.
Valuable replicas
Some people may be surprised by the ratings of replica cars.
On offer are an Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza "built" in 1932 by Pur Sang (USD 400,000 to 500,000), but also a Jaguar XKSS "built" in 1970 by Lynx (USD 375,000 to 450,000). For this money you can also get a real Jaguar XJ 220.
More information and pictures of the cars can be found on the auction house's website.
