For RM Sotheby's, the 2026 auction year begins on January 23 in Arizona. 90 vehicles, including three motorcycles, with a total value of over USD 60 million will go under the hammer at the Arizona Bitmore Resort in Phoenix. 61% of the vehicle lots will be offered without a reserve price, which is quite an announcement with an average value of over USD 640,000. On average, the vehicles on offer are almost 53 years old, with 17 pre-war cars compared to 15 "neoclassics", i.e. cars that have not even reached the youngtimer age of 20 years.
Porsche and Ferrari
The two dominant brands are Porsche with 21 and Ferrari with 17 cars. On average, they are 34 and 31 years young respectively. While 57% of Porsches are offered with "no reserve", the figure for Ferrari is 41%.
The third well-represented brand is Mercedes-Benz with five cars, but with an average age of 60 years, these are significantly more classic cars.
All other brands are represented with a maximum of two vehicles, and with Stutz, Baker Electric, Duryea and Muntz there are also rarely seen manufacturers at the start.
Ferrari supercar selection
Those who have always thirsted for the fastest and most extreme Ferrari creations will be offered almost the entire selection in Arizona.
A Ferrari F40 from 1991 is said to cost between USD 2.8 and 3.2 million.
The successor Ferrari F50 from 1995 is available for USD 7 to 9 million.
A Ferrari Enzo from 2003 with only a few miles on the clock is available for USD 5 to 6 million.
The Ferrari LaFerrari can also be purchased at auction in Arizona as a production car from 2015 (USD 4.5 to 5 million) and as a prototype P2 from 2012 with no publicly declared estimated value.
The alternatives from Porsche are also for sale in Arizona, namely a Pirsche 959 Komfort from 1988 (USD 1.8 to 2.2 million) ...
... and a Porsche Carrera GT from 2005 (with the same estimate).
There are two fairly new cars from Aston Martin up for auction, a Vulcan and the continuation version of the DB4 GT.
The former sports car league
Bidders who are more interested in 40- to 60-year-old classics should take a look at the BMW M1 from 1980.
The blue mid-engined sports car with only 15,600 km on the clock was estimated at USD 550,000 to 650,000, which doesn't sound like that much in euros and CHF.
You can put an early Lamborghini Countach LP400 from 1977 in your garage for USD 700,000 to 900,000.
The super classic Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 is available as a "Factory Development Car" from 1972 for USD 700,000 to 900,000.
And the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL is not missing either, as the 1957 roadster is even available twice with estimated values of between USD 1.1 and 2.2 million.
Also worth mentioning in this group is a Maserati Ghibil 4.7 from 1968 for USD 150,000 to 200,000 (no reserve) ...
... and a Shelby Cobra 289 from 1964 for USD 1 to 1.5 million (also without a reserve price).
The Ferrari GT trio
There are three Ferraris for GT enthusiasts to acquire in Arizona. And the estimated values show that this genre is attracting considerably less interest today than it did 10 years ago.
There is a 330 GT 2+2 from 1966 for USD 225,000 to 275,000.
In addition, there is a 330 GTC from 1967 with an estimated value of USD 500,000 to 600,000) ...
... and finally a more modern 365 GTC4 from 1972 for USD 150,000 to 200,000, the last without a reserve price.
Le Mans participant Porsche 924 GTP
A highly interesting Porsche 924 GTP from 1980, one of the three cars that competed in Porsche in 1980, was almost lost in the sale. Chassis 924003 was driven by Al Holbert and Derek Bell and finished 13th overall, ahead of two BMW M1s.
The car was later used in the IMSA and extensively restored to Le Mans condition at the end of the 1980s.
Given the importance of the car, the asking price of USD 300,000 to 400,000 almost seems like a bargain, especially as there is no reserve price.
Cheap cars too
You can also buy a car in Arizona for sums beyond six figures, especially as all cars valued at less than USD 200,000 are offered without a reserve price.
A 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560 SL will go under the hammer for USD 30,000 to 40,000.
An Edsel Pacer Convertible from 1958 is expected to fetch USD 60,000 to 70,000.
And for as little as USD 60,000 to 80,000, you can put a 1953 Jaguar XK120 DHC with Spats in your garage.
Even the 2009 Nissan GT-R, with an estimated value of USD 75,000 to 100,000, is likely to remain under six digits before the decimal point.
It is worth taking a look at the (online) catalog, as the cars on offer include a rare Muntz Jet from 1952 (USD 100,000 to 125,000), an Alpine-Renault A110 from 1964 or a Duesenberg Model SJ Convertible Sedan by Murphy from 1929 (USD 1.2 to 1.4 million).
Many pictures and extensive background information on the cars can be found on the RM Sotheby's website.
