Every year, RM/Sotheby's kicks off the series of auctions surrounding the Rétromobile in Paris. And on February 7, 2018, fine classics will once again go under the hammer at Place Vauban. A total of 84 cars will be auctioned, worth an average of EUR 436,000 (CHF 546,000), which means a total turnover of almost EUR 39 million (CHF 46 million) is expected.
Unlike in the USA, consignors and auction houses in Europe do not yet dare to offer the majority of vehicles without a reserve price. At RM/Sotheby's, however, 43 percent of lots are offered without a reserve price, which in extreme cases can end up in new hands for significantly less than the estimated price. However, the people at RM/Sotheby's will leave no stone unturned to prevent this from happening.
Mercedes-dominated pre-war group
Unlike Bonhams, where around a third of pre-war vehicles are going under the hammer in Paris, RM/Sotheby's is concentrating on a total of eight cars from the years up to 1942, half of which are four Mercedes-Benz Cabriolets of types 290 and 320.
There is also a Bugatti 35 from 1925, which will be offered for EUR 500,000 to 700,000 without a reserve price. What at first glance appears to be rather cheap is explained, among other things, by the fact that this Bugatti was once fitted with a replacement chassis and a replica engine. Nevertheless, this Type 35 is likely to be one of the most attractive vehicles in the auction, especially if you value driving pleasure per euro.
The youngsters are coming
With 30 cars that have not yet reached classic car age, RM/Sotheby's once again shows that new buyer segments are also looking for newer cars. There is even a practically new Bugatti Chiron from 2017 and a barely used Mercedes-Benz G 500 from 1014.
Super sports cars such as a Maserati MC12 (2005, EUR 2 to 2.5 million), Ferrari F40 (1992, EUR 850,000 to 950,000) or Bugatti EB 110 (1993, EUR 850,000 to 1.1 million) are just as much a part of this group as exotic cars (e.g. Magnate P708 from 2005).
And, of course, another McLaren P1 will go under the hammer.
Raisins
Among the particularly rare and attractive cars on offer from RM/Sotheby's are certainly the Iso Grifo A3/C from 1965 (EUR 2.5 to 3.0 million), the Bizzarrini 1900 GT Europa from 1968 (EUR 250,000 to 300,000) or the De Tomaso Mangusta from 1972 (EUR 190,000 to 240,000).
And, of course, there are certainly some attractive examples among the 17 Ferrari sports cars.
Alpine three times
Fans of the sports car manufacturer from Dieppe will be interested in the three Alpine-Renault cars. Two A110s, of which the white 1600 S from 1974 even took part in the Targa Florio in 1975, which should make the asking price of EUR 130,000 to 140,000 almost bearable.
Even more exotic is the A110B from 1974, which was equipped with one of the four-valve engines with around 200 hp.
With successes in rallycross, this Alpine may not be the most beautiful, but it is certainly a very rare version, which the estimated price of EUR 140,000 to 180,000 certainly suggests
You can become an Alpine owner a little more cheaply with an early A310. But EUR 75,000 to 85,000 is certainly an ambitious price for the Berlinette successor, even if it is a fuel-injected 1600 version.
Six Lamborghini
There is an interesting selection for fans of the wild bull from Sant'Agata.
Although a Miura is missing, there is otherwise a thoroughly representative cross-section of Lamborghini history up for auction, starting with a 400 GT 2+2 from 1967 (EUR 450,000 to 500'000), the Espada Series II from 1970 (EUR 160,000 to 200,000), the Jarama 400 GT from 1971 (EUR 130,000 to 180,000) and the Jalpa from 1985 (EUR 100,000 to 125,000).
Then there are the two mid-engined V12 sports cars Countach (1991, EUR 250,000 to 300,000) and Diablo (1996, EUR 275,000 to 325,000).
Super classics
Of course, the auction "blue chips" are not missing at RM in Paris either, whether it is a BMW 507 from 1958 (EUR 1.6 to 1.8 million), a Ferrari 275 GTB with aluminum body from 1965 (EUR 2.4 to 2.8 million), a Maserati Ghibli Spyder from 1970 (EUR 700,000 to 800,000) or Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Series 1 Roadster from 1961 (EUR 150,000 to 180,000).
And fans of the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer are sure to find a car of interest among the 14 Porsches on display, as the 356, 911, 912 and 914 are all represented.
Further information and many pictures of the individual vehicles can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
