The RM/Sotheby's auction in Paris normally takes place alongside the Rétromobile classic car fair. However, the auction already had to take place alone in 2021 due to the pandemic and the RM people are sticking to the original date in 2022, even though the Rétromobile has been postponed by 1.5 months. The tent set-up at Place Vendôme and the start time on February 2, 2022 at 5 p.m. will also remain the same.
A total of almost 60 cars will go under the hammer in Paris with the public; on average, the cars are 45 years old and cost EUR 431,000. Half of the vehicles will be offered without a reserve price.
Mainly Ferrari
Of the 58 vehicles on offer, 37 are from the Ferrari brand, i.e. almost two thirds. Such a dominance is rarely seen, but it has to do with the fact that around half of the cars come from Marcel Petitjean's collection, the first part of which was already auctioned in Essen in 2020.
Cheap finds with horses?
Of course, it is primarily this collection of Ferraris from collector Petitjean, who began buying rare cars that he liked 50 years ago. However, most, if not all, of the cars have been sitting for a long time, some probably for decades. Accordingly, the RM specialists recommend "recommissioning". This also explains the sometimes surprisingly low estimates for sought-after Ferrari sports cars.
A Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina from 1977, for example, is listed in the catalog for EUR 75,000 to 110,000, a 365 GTC/4 from 1972 for EUR 120,000 to 170,000.
EUR 300,000 to 400,000 should be invested in a 330 GTC from 1968 and EUR 200,000 to 300,000 in a 365 GT4 BB from 1975.
The cars are not in bad condition, but the paintwork has been changed on some of them and not all of the numbers are correct in all cases.
Among the Petitjean finds there are also some very special rarities, such as the Ferrari 275 GTB/4 from 1966, which once stood at the Paris Motor Show, was later used for driving tests by Sport Auto and then ended up in the hands of the first owner Charles Jourdan, from whom Petitjean took over the car in 1969. EUR 1.7 to 2.0 million should certainly be possible here.
The expensive examples also include a Ferrari 288 GTO from 1985 (EUR 2.4 to 2.6 million) and a 250 GT/L Berlinetta Lusso from 1964 from Swiss first ownership (EUR 900,000 to 1.1 million.
All these Ferrari vehicles by Petitjean are offered without a reserve price!
In addition to the Petitjean Ferrari sports cars, there are also other products from Maranello from other consignors, such as a 1996 F50 (EUR 2.8 to 3.2 million).
Some super classics without horses
In addition to the "glut" of Ferraris, other exotic cars almost lacked attention.
However, the Dino 206 GT from 1969 (EUR 350,000 to 450,000) or the Aston Martin DB4 Convertible from 1963 (EUR 1.25 to 1.5 million) are certainly also of interest.
From Lamborghini there is a 400 GT 2+2 from 1966 (EUR 250,000 to 300,000) and an Islero S from 1969, as well as an LM002 for sale.
The Mercedes-Benz brand is contributing a 300 SL Roadster from 1958 (EUR 800,000 to 1.0 million) and a 300 Cabriolet D from 1952 (EUR 170,000 to 240,000).
And the Bugatti EB110 GT from 1994 (EUR 1 to 1.2 million) is also sure to generate interest.
And then there is also one of the rare Fiat 8Vs from 1952 for sale, which is expected to cost EUR 825,000 to 925,000.
Special and exotic items
RM/Sotheby's can also offer some very unusual cars.
One of these is the Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI "Jägermeister" from 1995. The ready-to-drive racing car, which took part in the DTM/ITC in 1995 and 1996 and won the two races in Diepholz in 1995 with Michael Bartels at the wheel, is expected to cost EUR 600,000 to 700,000.
The Ferrari Meera S from 1983, which was designed by Michelotti's son Edgardo and is now worth EUR 90,000 to 110,000, is certainly one of the more exotic examples.
The Abarth 2000 Sport Tipo SE010 from 1969, for which EUR 350,000 to 400,000 is required, must also be counted among the rarities.
But of course this list could be extended.
More information and many pictures of the individual vehicles can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
