Pebble Beach week in mid-August is known to be the highlight of the auction year. The major auction companies present the rarest and most expensive automobiles and compete for the favor of the bidding public. 2022 is no exception, but it has to be said that the offerings that RM/Sotheby's will present over three evenings are bursting with highlights.
This can already be seen from a rudimentary analysis of the figures. There are 188 cars that are to be brokered for around USD 282 million. This means an average price of around USD 1.5 million. 59 cars are listed with estimated values in the seven-digit range, seven others even in the eight-digit range.
Almost 65 years old on average
66 of the cars date from the pre-war period, 14 were built after 2002. The average vehicle age is over 64 years, which means that the cars are significantly older on average compared to other auctions.
Ferrari in the lead
Over 30 brands are represented in Monterey, 31 of which (including one Dino) come from Ferrari. 27 Mercedes-Benz, 13 Porsche and 10 (!) Bugatti lead the list of brands behind the cars from Maranello.
At the other end of the spectrum are manufacturers that are mostly no longer active, such as AC, Aero, Allard, Arnolt-Bristol and Triumph.
Ten Mercedes-Benz 500/540K
This has hardly ever happened before, with a total of ten pre-war classics of the 500/540K type coming under the hammer in Monterey. Among them are some particularly sought-after variants such as the 540 K Special Roadster from 1937, which is looking for a new owner for USD 9 to 12 million.
Virtually all of the cars come from a larger collection and have obviously not been driven for some time. In addition to the very respectable estimated values, you should also be able to find the budget for careful maintenance.
In addition to the ten 500/540 Ks mentioned above, many other interesting and beautiful pre-war vehicles will be on offer on the first evening, including two Bucciali (!), several Bugatti, two Delahaye, a Delage, a Minerva and two Packard.
Perhaps the most spectacular car of the first evening, however, was the 1924 Hispano-Suiza H6C "Tulipwood" Torpedo. The car was once ordered by amateur racing driver André Dubonnet, who took part in the 1924 Targa Florio and the Coppa Florio, finishing in the top positions.
The bodywork was sculpted from wood by aircraft manufacturer Nieuport-Astra! Now this Hispano, which is certainly one of the brand's most famous examples, is to find a new owner for USD 8 to 12 million.
The best Ferrari?
Carroll Shelby won more races with the Ferrari 410 Sport Spider from 1955 with chassis number 0598 CM than with any other racing car in his career. This was no coincidence, as Shelby noted on the fuel tank of the racing sports car designed and built by Scaglietti: "Mr. Ferrari told me that this was the best Ferrari he ever built."
This not only fast but also really beautiful car won the 1956 1000 km of Buenos Aires under Juan Manuel Fangio, Shelby won eight times in 10 races with it. But Phil Hill, Eugenio Castellotti, Masten Gregory, Richie Ginther, Joakim Bonnier, Bruce Kessler, Jim Rathmann and Chuck Daigh were also at the wheel. You can't get much more Palmares than that.
We will find out on Saturday, August 20, 2022, when the car goes under the hammer as lot 355, whether this is enough to pull USD 25 to 30 million out of the pockets of interested parties.
The Ferrari 410 is one of a total of 31 vehicles from the Maranello brand. You could almost say a lot about each of them, because a Ferrari 275 GTB/C from 1966 (USD 7.5 to 9 million), a Ferrari 500 TRC Spider from 1957 (USD 8 to 10 million) or a Ferrari 250 GT LWB Berlinetta Tour de France from 1959 (USD 5 to 6 million) are of course gourmet pieces, as is the Ferrari F300 from 1998, which Michael Schumacher once drove.
And when writing about Ferrari, one should of course not forget Maserati, the biggest opponent in the fifties. As part of the "Oscar Davis Collection", a Maserati 450S from 1958 is being offered for USD 9 to 11 million. The ninth of ten cars built was, what a coincidence, also delivered to Carroll Shelby, drove to the top of three SCCA events and also competed in beauty contests.
And while we're on the subject of beautiful racing cars, we should also mention the Porsche 718 RSK from 1959, which achieved a class victory in both Sebring and the 1000 km at the Nürburgring. The factory Spyder is now looking for a new home for USD 4.8 to 5.2 million.
Many beautiful special bodies
The RM auction is not only a feast for Ferrari or Maserati fans, who will certainly not miss out, but also an event not to be missed by enthusiasts who know their way around vehicles with special and unique special bodies. Around 70 of these hand-built and often individually drawn bodies on chassis from a wide range of manufacturers will be on sale at the Monterey Conference Center in August 2022.
One of these is the Talbot-Lago T150-C SS from 1938, which was fitted with the famous teardrop-shaped coupé bodywork by Figoni et Falaschi. You should bring USD 9 to 11 million if you want to put this extremely elegant car in your own garage.
At the other end of the spectrum, there are rarities that hardly anyone has on their radar, such as a 1952 Lancia Aurelia B53 Giardinetta with a Woody station wagon body by Viotti. Here, just USD 200,000 to 300,000 is said to be enough to make a move, and the car, like almost 50 percent of the cars, is being offered without a reserve price.
Super classics in large numbers
In view of the high average price, it is easy to guess that there is no shortage of super classics. Whether Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, Porsche 911, Jaguar E-Type or Lamborghini Miura, the range is broad and extensive.
There are also some very special trouvailles among them, such as a BMW 328 from 1938 (USD 700,000 to 850,000), a Fiat 8V Supersonic from 1953 (USD 1.7 to 2 million), a Lamborghini LP5000 S from 1984 (USD 700'000 to 900,000), a 1976 Lancia Stratos HF (USD 400,000 to 600,000), a 1955 Maserati A6G/54 2000 Spyder Zagato (USD 4.5 to 5.5 million) or three (!) Nissan Skyline GT-R (1989-1995).
The Porsche 928 S, once owned by George Harrison (Beatles), might also be worth considering, even if it is said to enjoy quite a star bonus at USD 150,000 to 250,000.
The list could go on and on, we recommend a close look at the table below.
"Cheaper" rarities?
If you don't have millions in your bank account, you could still get your hands on a dream classic in Monterey, even if none of the cars are likely to be really cheap.
A Jaguar XK 120 Roadster has been estimated at USD 100,000 to 125,000, while a 1958 Chevrolet Corvette is on the books for USD 60,000 to 80,000.
A rare 1936 MG NB Magnette with supercharger is expected to cost USD 125,000 to 175,000.
And for a 1966 Meyers Manx Buggy, USD 50,000 to 60,000 should be suitable for purchase.
The lowest estimate was for a very attractive 1935 Triumph Gloria Six Tourer, which is on offer at USD 40,000 to 70,000. All cars with estimates below 250,000 are sold without a reserve price. Perhaps you are the only bidder or the others are giving up early?
More information about the individual cars and lots of pictures can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
