RM/Sotheby's will be offering 40 drivable cars, a Formula 1 show car from Ferrari and a children's Porsche 917 that can also be driven by adults alongside a number of automobiles at the London-Brighton Run on November 6, 2021.
In total, the vehicles have been estimated at almost GBP 20 million, making each car worth around GBP 477,000. The average age of the cars is 44 years, none of them were built before 1928.
Porsche 934 with German and Swiss racing history
Only 31 Porsche 934s were built at the factory based on the 930 Turbo in order to offer customers competitive Group 4 racing cars. While the windows could still be raised and lowered electrically, air conditioning and comfort teams were otherwise omitted. The brakes came from the 917, and huge plastic fender extensions created space for thick BBS alloy wheels.
Chassis 0172 initially remained in Germany and was victorious with Richard Leder in Kassel Calden, among other places. Later, the 934 went to Peter Zbinden, who sometimes raced together with Edi Kofel. Between 1978 and 1980, the two of them achieved an impressive list of successes in the Swiss championship, but also in international races. Among other things, Kofel won Group 4 in Monza in May 1980.
The car was later converted into a 935, only to be restored to its original condition a few years ago, in which it can still be seen today.
The racing car has now been estimated at GBP 875,000 to 975,000. It will be interesting to see how much this rarity will be worth to the bidders.
One of 53 C-Types
Commander John "Jack" Rutherford drove the Jaguar C-Type with chassis number XKC014 in 1953 at the Nascar Speed Week in Daytona Beach. At that time, the C-Type was one of 53 built by the factory and was still beige.
A longer racing history followed, but the car did not achieve any great successes. In the 1980s, the Jag was restored and now GBP 4 to 4.5 million is being asked for the extremely elegant racing car.
Two very special Recreations
In the late fifties, Zagato put a Coupé and a Spider body on the chassis of the Porsche 356. The cars were lost, but a collector convinced Zagato to resurrect the cars.
18 cars were created, half open, the other half closed.
One of each type will be sold in London, both are expected to find a new owner for GBP 400,000 to 450,000.
Four pre-war cars
The proximity to the London-Brighton event meant that no very early cars were put up for auction, but four pre-war cars were.
The most exciting car of these four is certainly the 1930 Bentley 4 1/2 Litre Supercharger with Vanden Plas Touerer bodywork. The Bentley on offer was not only one of 50 homologation vehicles with a supercharger, it was also exhibited at the 1929 Olympia Motor Show and served as a test car for "The Motor" magazine the following year.
The Bentley is now set to find a new owner for GBP 3.8 to 4.2 million.
A second Bentley 4 1/2 Litre from 1928 is considerably cheaper, estimated at GBP 320,000 to 360,000.
A Mercedes-Benz 630 K Tourer from 1928 was estimated at GBP 650,000 to 800,000, while the "wild" Rolls-Royce 20/25 'Dreadnought Special' from 1931 is expected to fetch around GBP 150,000 to 200,000.
Mainly super classics ...
The majority of the cars are super classics.
There is something for every interest, such as a Porsche 356 C Carrera 2 2000 from 1964 (GBP 450,000 to 550,000), a Mercedes-Benz 300 S Coupé from 1952 (GBP 240,000 to 300,000), a Ferrari 250 GTE from 1963 (GBP 200,000 to 250,000) or a Jaguar E-Type from 1961 (GBP 145,000 to 185,000).
The Porsche 959 from 1987 is really expensive (GBP 800,000 to 1.9 million), but the Ferrari LaFerrari from 2016 is even asking GBP 2 to 2.5 million.
Of course, British classics such as an Aston Martin DB4 from 1959 (GBP 325,000 to 375,000) or an AC Ace Bristol from 1960 (GBP 225,000 to 275,000) are not missing.
... but also affordable youngtimers
Even those who prefer to think a little more modern and don't want to spend a six-figure sum straight away can bid at RM in London.
For example, a Rover Mini Cooper Sport 500 from 2001 (GBP 30,000 to 40,000), a Vauxhall VX220 Turbo from 2004 (EUR 20,000 to 30,000) or a Mercedes-Benz SL 55 AMG from 2003 (EUR 20,000 to 30,000) are on offer. Like around a quarter of the vehicles on offer, they are all offered "no reserve", i.e. without a minimum price.
This also applies to a Morgan Plus 4 from 2019, one of the anniversary models.
Perhaps the most exciting rarity among the more recent cars, however, alongside a Koenig Special based on the Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC and an AMG Brabus Widebody 300 CE, is the Ascari FGT prototype from 1993, which has survived and is now looking for a new enthusiast owner for GBP 60,000 to 80,000.
You can find out more about the cars on the RM/Sotheby's website.
