The 2021 auction year is off to a slow start, with large public gatherings not making sense due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, RM/Sotheby's will be able to welcome a small suburban audience to the Otto Car Club in Scottsdale (Arizona) on January 22, 2021, from where the live auction will be broadcast to a much larger internet audience.
Wide range
85 cars (including three-wheelers and a mockup) are on offer. Together, they are said to be worth around USD 47.2 million, so each car is expected to cost around USD 556,000. The average age is almost exactly 50 years, but the range of years of manufacture is wide, extending from 1930 to 2020, i.e. covering 90 years.
Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz are represented with seven cars, Ford and Shelby with six and the remaining 38 brands with an even smaller contingent.
Valuable and attractive pre-war vehicles
With 10 vehicles, the pre-war collection is surprisingly well represented. Interestingly, all of these cars are from the 1930s, including the second most expensive classic of the entire auction, a Bugatti Type 57 SC with Corsica bodywork.
The elegant two-plus-two-seater with chassis number 57512 is one of eight Type 57Ss that were fitted at Corsica and only two of them received the four-seater body. Now USD 4.75 to 6.5 million is being asked for.
Much cheaper, but certainly a real pleasure to drive, is the BMW 328 from 1939, which is offered for USD 475,000 to 550,000.
And then there are a whole series of Americans as well as an SS 100 Jaguar 3.5-Litre from 1938 (USD 500,000 to 600,000) up for auction.
A D-Type as a figurehead
The honor of being the most valuable vehicle at the auction, however, goes to a 1955 Jaguar D-Type.
With its red bodywork and red interior, XKD 518 is certainly an exceptional example, but at USD 5.75 to 7.5 million it is also an expensive one and actually far too good for racing use today.
The choice of agony for prospective buyers with a budget of USD 2.5 to 4.5 million
The four cars on offer in the 2.5 to 4.5 million range show just how broad the spectrum will be in Scottsdale. Two Ferraris and two hyper sports cars come into question if you want to spend exactly that much money.
However, there will hardly be anyone interested in buying a Ferrari 375 America from 1954 as a Vignale Coupé (chassis 0327 AL) or a McLaren Speedtail from 2020 at the same time.
In between are a Koenigsegg Regera from 2019 and a Ferrari Enzo from 2003.
The exotic
There is also no shortage of almost never-seen classics at RM in Scottsdale.
There is one of the only newly built Cizeta V16Ts from 1993 (chassis ZA9V16T00MMD38101) with the 16-cylinder engine. The estimated value sounds moderate at USD 600,000 to 750,000.
Or how about becoming the owner of a 1952 Tojeiro MG (chassis RMS1) and sitting in the design ancestor of the Cobra, so to speak? USD 200,000 to 250,000 would seem almost inexpensive.
Similar to the Cizeta, the 1932 Marmon Sixteen Five-Passenger Sedan with LeBaron limousine body (Chasis 16 140 818) also had a V16 engine. However, it is said to cost only half as much as the Cizeta.
The Lotus Elite from 1959, a series 1 model for racing, is also one of the exotic cars. The Elite is one of the most beautiful sports cars of all time and stood out at the time with its plastic body and lack of an actual chassis. Now USD 60,000 to 70,000 should be enough to get you started.
Some conversions
An open Ferrari Testarossa was just as rare ex works as a Range Rover convertible or a Mercedes-Benz W126 S-Class with a folding roof.
In Scottsdale, however, RM/Sotheby's can still fulfill such wishes and the elaborate conversions are unlikely to be more expensive than a well-maintained example with the standard look.
The various classics from the "Homologation Collection" should not be omitted. Rare evolutionary vehicles that were built in small numbers come together here, such as a Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo 2.
