In an online auction running from September 8 to 15, RM Sotheby’s will offer 93 cars from the Willy Michiels Collection, as well as several motorcycles and a children’s car. The vehicles will be available for viewing in Belgium on September 12 and 13, 2026.
The vehicles on offer are collectively valued at approximately EUR 5.5 million and are, on average, nearly 52 years old. All lots are offered without a reserve price.
Gambling and Classic Cars
August Willy Michiels, also known as “Bingo Willy,” made his fortune through gambling enterprises. He used part of his fortune to build an extensive collection of classic cars. Michiels died in 2020; for the past few years, most of the vehicles have been on display in the collection. RM Sotheby’s therefore recommends:
“Some cars and motorcycles require mechanical overhauls to be roadworthy. As part of this estate auction, the vehicles are offered ‘as is,’ and RM Sotheby’s recommends that potential buyers inspect the lots before submitting a bid, if possible.”
Mercedes-Benz in Particular
Nearly half of the cars on offer—along with a few mopeds, motorcycles, and a children’s car—bear the Mercedes star.
In addition, there are nine Citroëns, seven Rolls-Royces, four Porsches, and three Willys.
Among the other brands are well-known manufacturers such as Buick, Cadillac, Audi, BMW, MG, and Opel.
A 300 SL, an SLR, and an SLS
While the average price of the vehicles on offer is around EUR 58,000, there are also a few cars that are expected to sell for significantly more.
The top of the list is a late-model Mercedes-Benz 300 SL from 1962. The fully restored car, featuring an aluminum engine block and disc brakes, finished in a gray metallic paint, is expected to cost between EUR 900,000 and 1.2 million.
Also up for auction is a 2010 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (EUR 200,000 to 250,000) and a 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster for EUR 250,000 to 300,000.
Many SL models from three model series
The large number of convertibles in the Mercedes lineup is striking.
The 1960s through the 1990s are particularly well represented, with three “Pagoda” models (113 series, all 230 SLs), several 107 series, and R129 series. The estimated values are all in the five-figure range.
Those looking for larger sedans will also find what they’re looking for in the collection: there are three 600 models up for auction alone—two sedans from 1965 and 1971, as well as a six-door 600 Pullmann from 1970.
An Interesting Mix
The rest of the selection offers an exciting mix featuring many classic sedans, such as a BMW 502, a Jaguar S-Type, a 1959 Opel Kapitän, and a 1959 Peugeot 203.
Also not to be missed are the four “Goddesses” from Citroën and the four Traction Avant models from the same brand.
In addition, there are Rolls-Royce convertibles and sedans spanning four decades.
The VW Käfer is also represented, along with a whole range of SUVs.
Even sports cars such as a 1955 MG TD, a 1966 Morgan Plus 4 Two-Seater Competition, a Porsche 356, and two Porsche 911s are included.
The selection has a lot to offer, and the estimated values are moderate. But you shouldn’t overlook the warning (see above) from RM Sotheby’s.
