RM/Sotheby's was also forced to find an alternative due to the cancellation of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elégance. As the "Online Only" format has proven its worth, RM/Sotheby's will be using it again this time and can certainly try to sell some of the cars registered for Pebble Beach online.
Bidding is open from 1:00 PM on August 10, 2020, with staggered bidding on August 14 and 15, 2020.
Almost 50 million USD
The total estimated value is around USD 48.7 million, spread over 89 cars and one motorcycle. There are also some automobilia.
On average, the vehicles are 52.6 years old. A third of the lots are offered without a reserve price, mainly the cheaper cars.
One exception, however, is the BMW M1 Procar from 1980, estimated at USD 600,000 to 800,000. Here, too, no minimum bid is required, so it will be interesting to see whether this risk pays off.
Ferrari in the lead
Not only is the brand from Maranello the most represented car manufacturer with 20 vehicles, but nine Ferraris are also at the top of the list of the most highly valued cars. However, the most expensive car is not one of the otherwise sought-after 1960s Berlinettas, but a Ferrari 550 GT1 Prodrive from 2001.
USD 3.85 to 4.85 million is the estimate, based on an impressive palmares and the fact that only ten of these cars were built at Prodrive. We will see if the bidders weigh these considerations similarly.
However, the top 10 also includes two Ferrari 275 GTBs, a 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione, a 250 GT/L "Lusso", a 500 Superfast from 1964 and an F40. None of these cars is expected to find a new owner for less than USD 1.2 million.
In the middle of the Ferraris is a neo-classic from Italy, the Pagani Huayra from 2014, which is said to be worth USD 1.8 to 2 million.
In addition to Ferrari and Pagani, there are another 35 car brands represented.
A super classic armada
If 20 Ferraris weren't enough, RM also has many more super classics to offer at the "Shift Monterey" auction, including two Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadsters from 1957 and 1960.
Duesenberg SJs are also always highly valued; here RM can bring a 1929 Convertible Sedan with a Murphy body under the hammer for USD 850,000 to 1.1 million.
A 1961 Aston Martin DB4 (USD 400,000 to 450,000) and several Jaguar E-Types will also be up for grabs, as will a 1939 BMW 328 (USD 500,000 to 600,000) and a 1989 Lamborghini Countach (USD 250,000 to 300,000).
And for fans of the early Maserati years, the A6 1500/3C as a Berlinetta Pinin Farina from 1949 (USD 550,000 to 650,000) or the 3500 GT Frua Spyder from 1959 (USD 750,000 to 1 million) might be worth a second look.
One of 11 Porsche 916s
Only 10 Porsche 916s were built by the factory in Zuffenhausen; they all had a permanently welded-in roof and a more powerful engine with a larger displacement than the standard 914/6.
The coupé with chassis number 9142330011 once belonged to Mrs. Piëch and now has just over 50,000 km on the clock. Completely restored and yellow as at the beginning, this is certainly a very special trouvaille. The bidders will decide in mid-August whether it is worth the requested USD 900,000 to 1 million.
American rarity
Even rarer, but less noble under the bodywork, is the Edwards American Roadster from 1954. Only five of these American luxury sports cars are believed to have been built in the 1950s. The bodywork of serial number 8C110808 conceals a Henry J chassis and an Oldsmobile engine.
This American rarity was estimated at USD 100,000 to 120,000.
It thus forms part of an ensemble of 12 US vehicles, which together make up only around one ninth of the entire range.
Three times Zagato
RM can offer three Zagato creations, which together cover an age range from 15 to 90 years!
The oldest car of the three is an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport Spider from 1930. Today, it has a magnificent Zagato body, which, however, was only fitted to chassis 8513053 in the mid-1980s and was not hammered at Carrozzeria Zagato. That is why the estimated value is "only" USD 700,000 to 900,000.
Let's take a leap back in time to the early nineties. Back then, ten Ferrari 348 tb were refined at Zagato. Whether you like this version better than the original from Maranello is up to you, but the rarity of chassis ZFFKA35B000084810 has a direct impact on the asking price of USD 225,000 to 275,000.
Let's skip ahead another 15 years and take a look at what Zagato achieved in 2005. At that time, six Ferrari 575s were converted as a tribute to the famous Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France Zagato with chassis number 0515 GT. With double bubble and two-tone paintwork, this example ZFFBV55AX50140719 certainly looks promising, but it has hardly been driven in the last 15 years. However, USD 1.75 to 2.25 million is no small price to pay.
And if you like Italian coachbuilders, you should perhaps also take a look at the Fiat derivatives from Vignale and Allemano!
Limited range of affordable classics.
Most of the cars on offer at RM are priced in the six-figure range and above, but there are a few exceptions, such as a 1954 MG TF (USD 30,000 to 40,000) or a 2000 Acura NSX-T (USD 60,000 to 70,000).
Only 15 cars in total (and the Indian motorcycle) are below the USD 100,000 threshold, but most of them are "no limit", so bargains are conceivable.
More information and pictures of the individual vehicles can be found on the RM/Sotheby's website.
