The RM/Sotheby's auction in Hershey is one of the annual events organized by the well-known auction house. What is appealing about it is that for once it is mainly old cars that go under the hammer in Hershey, while youngtimers and newtimers are almost completely absent.

142 cars, light commercial vehicles and tractors are on the lot list for October 5 and 6, 2017, with a total value of around USD 18.6 million (EUR 15.6 million, CHF 18.1 million), meaning that each vehicle lot is expected to fetch around USD 131,000 (EUR 110,000, CHF 127,000).

American brands dominate

Hardly any other auction is as dominated by American brands as that of Hershey. 23 Ford, 17 Cadillac, 11 Packard, 6 Buick, 6 Chevrolet and 6 Chrysler make up around half of the offer alone. In addition, there are many American brands that have long since disappeared, such as Cord, De Soto, Gasmobile, La Salle and Knox.

The Europeans, for their part, are clearly in the minority, although a Delage, a Fiat, 1 Ferrari or an Isotta-Fraschini do make it into the auction.

Valuable Pierce-Arrow

The most expensive car in the auction is a 1933 Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow, an extremely innovative car with a streamlined body.

However, USD 2 to 3 million is certainly an announcement for the elegant American.

The flying star

Although the Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8a "Flying Star" from 1930 is "only" an exact recreation, the car has won many prizes. And it looks fabulous.

At USD 400,000 to 500,000, the body costs are unlikely to be recouped.

Sympathetic Derby

The small French Derby Type GSEH from 1929 is much cheaper. USD 60,000 to 80,000 is the estimated value for the cycle car with Ruby four-cylinder engine.

Since only about 50 of these cars still exist, this seems a fair expectation, especially as the car is offered without a lower limit.

Lots of wood

The 1940 Buick Super Estate Wagon with its elaborate and extremely elegant wooden body is typically American.

When you consider that around 5,000 hours went into the restoration, the USD 175,000 to 225,000 being asked for the car seems downright reasonable. After all, it is one of only 495 US models built in the first year of the Buick Estate Wagon.

Two thirds without a reserve price

94 cars, i.e. 66 percent of the offer, will be auctioned without a reserve price. Anyone hoping for a bargain here could well get their money's worth, especially as there are many very special cars for sale.
