On the occasion of Retromobile, RM Sotheby's will once again be auctioning 111 collectible cars in Paris on February 4 and 5. The majority of the lots come from the "Curated Collection" and will be offered without a reserve price. The total estimated value is around 100 million euros, of which a Ferrari 250 LM alone accounts for a quarter.
A maximum estimate is not even given for the car with chassis number 5893. "More than 25 million" is all the auction catalog says. An actual value may also be difficult to quantify, as chassis 5893 is the car in which Masten Gregory and Jochen Rindt (with the kind support of Ed Hugus) won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1965.
After this success, the NART with chassis number 5893 competed two more times at Le Mans (1968 and 1969) and three times at the 24 Hours of Daytona (1966, 1968 and 1970). Daytona 1970 - where the ageing Ferrari finished in a respectable 7th place - was also the last ever official race outing of a 250 LM.
That same year, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum acquired the car, which has been part of their collection to this day.
Three brands, half the offer
Financially at the forefront, Ferrari is only the second strongest force in terms of quantity. Porsche makes up a good third of the range with 38 vehicles (not including a tractor from 1956). Ferrari, on the other hand, is only just under a third as well represented as Porsche: twelve cars carry the horse; in addition, there is a Dino 246 GT from the immediate family. Alfa Romeo follows in third place among the most common brands with eleven vehicles.
An Alfetta GTV, with an estimate of 10,000 to 15,000 euros, is also one of the two cheapest cars in the catalog. A Citroën 2CV from 1960 has been valued the same by the auction house.
A Bugatti Centodieci for an estimated ten to 15 million euros is the second most expensive lot after the Ferrari 250 LM and, being built in 2022, is also one of the three youngest cars on offer. Although the average age of the offer is relatively young at 30 years, this does not mean that there is nothing old. After all, ten auction vehicles were built before the Second World War. On the other hand, 30 cars are from 1994 or younger.
Few millionaires
On average, a lot is expected to fetch around 970,000 euros, although the Centodieci and 250 LM naturally distort the impression somewhat. For example, 95 of the 111 cars in total are below this amount, even at the maximum estimate.
The few lots estimated at over one million euros include a Bentley "T-Type" Continental from 1954 (1.8 to 2.4 million euros) and a Ferrari 212/225 Export with Vignale bodywork (2.5 to 3.5 million euros).
Another Vignale coupé of the same age is likely to be available for around a seventh of the Ferrari estimate price: a Cisitalia 202 SC from 1949, which has been estimated at 400,000 to 500,000 euros.
The best ratio of rarity to price is probably offered by a Lamborghini Islero S for 250,000 to 300,000 euros. The 1969 example on offer in Paris is one of only 100 built in 1969 and 1970.
Mismatched pairs
When it comes to two-door sports cars, Paris offers a choice between old and young. On the one hand, an Aston Martin DB6 Shooting Brake with a Panelcraft body enriches the range. The green three-door model for 550,000 to 700,000 euros is said to be the only left-hand drive example of its kind.
On the other hand, one of 19 Bentley Continental "Flying Stars" will be on offer in Paris. Built in 2008 by Touring Superleggera, the estate car is expected to fetch between 300,000 and 400,000 euros. The Bentley offer from RM is completed by a 4 1/2 Litre from 1939 with a convertible body by Vanvooren for 400,000 to 500,000 euros.
Bidders flirting with the purchase of a Porsche 928 have the greatest choice. This is because RM will be offering seven of them in Paris, ranging from the "normal" coupé (1979, 15,000-25,000 euros) to the S4 Clubsport for 220,000 to 300,000 euros.
Two special Italians are also worth mentioning. Firstly, the Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI DTM, which was driven by Christian Danner in the 1994 season. Then there is the Abarth 208A from 1955 with a Boano body designed by Michelotti. The two-tone Spyder is the only road-going offshoot of the 207A racing car ever built. At 500,000 to 600,000 and 550,000 to 650,000 euros respectively, the two very different Italians are in roughly the same price bracket.
Even if some of the estimates are quite ambitious: The high proportion of lots without a reserve price will certainly provide one or two surprises. The most exciting question, of course, will be how far the Ferrari 250 LM will exceed its estimate.
