While the 37th Paris-Dakar Rally is underway, Youngtimers Magazine will be showcasing a dozen of the vehicles that have successfully participated in the difficult rally through Africa in the past at this year's Rétromobile in Paris (February 5 to 9, 2014).
The pioneers of the Paris-Dakar rally did not drive through the desert with high-bred and specialized racing equipment, but with Citroën GS, Renault 5, VW Beetle or Range Rover. In 1978, a Renault KZ from 1927 even took part and made the front pages of the major newspapers.
The Paris-Dakar took place for the first time in 1978 under Thierry Sabine. 182 started in Paris on the Trocadéro square to arrive in Dakar after a journey of around 10,000 km, although only 74 made it.
More information about the Rétromobile can be found on the event website.
