On September 23, 1992, the time had come: Opel opened the new plant in Eisenach. The first Opel Astra "made in Eisenach" rolled off the production line exactly 25 years ago in the presence of the then German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and in front of employees and invited guests. Today, the plant located below the famous Wartburg Castle is one of the most modern in the world in terms of environmental compatibility, manufacturing technology and production system and has long since become an integral part of the city and region. Around 1,800 employees produce the Opel Corsa, the Opel Adam and its siblings Adam Rocks and Adam S here. On Saturday, September 30, the car manufacturer is celebrating the anniversary with an open day. Employees, their families, all interested parties from the Eisenach region and friends of the brand are invited.
After reunification: Opel as one of the first manufacturers in the new federal states
Just two years before the first Astra from Eisenach sees the light of day, Opel begins production of the Vectra in Thuringia. This makes Opel one of the first West German car manufacturers to become involved in the new federal states. With the new plant and the corresponding investment volume of over one billion marks, Opel lays the foundation for the revival of automobile manufacturing in the tradition-rich region. Opel is also creating numerous new jobs, including at its suppliers.
Just eight months after the start of production of the Opel Astra, the first Corsa rolls off the Eisenach assembly line in 1993. The first Corsa "made in Eisenach" is also the first Corsa "made in Germany". Prior to this, the model was manufactured exclusively in Zaragoza, Spain. In 2012, the small car gets a brother: From now on, the stylish individuality champion Opel Adam is also produced in Eisenach.
A look behind the scenes: How the Opel ADAM and Opel Corsa are built
On September 30, visitors will also have the opportunity to experience some of the plant's eventful history up close. For example, when the founding fathers Liedtke and Hughes and the long-standing Chairman of the Works Council Harald Lieske receive a special honor and talk about their experiences. Opel fans can also take a look behind the scenes of production and learn how the Adam and Corsa are manufactured. Everyone will also get their money's worth with test drives in the bestsellers from the current Opel product portfolio. Attractive vehicle offers round off the program.
Big anniversary celebration: open day for everyone on September 30 from 10 a.m.
In addition to the central event stage and numerous stands from clubs, associations and institutions from the region, there will also be a colorful entertainment program for young and old. The open day from 10 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. will be an experience for the whole family.
