After a year's hiatus, when the Dolder auction was held at the Grand Hotel itself, the big summer auction of the Oldtimer Galerie Toffen is returning to the renovated ice rink on Zurich's local mountain. This means that the cars can once again roll past the public and prove that they run and are musical.
57 vehicles are registered, including four motorcycles and one sidecar. On average, the lots are exactly 50 years old, the extremes being a Millot Vis-à-Vis from 1895 (CHF 65,000 to 85,000) and an Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione from 2010 (CHF 280,000 to 330,000).
The total value of the lots was estimated at around CHF 9.2 million (EUR 8 million), i.e. CHF 161,000 or EUR 140,000 per vehicle.
29 brands
On average, each brand accounted for only two vehicles on June 16, 2018, with the largest delegations being from Porsche (8 vehicles), Ford (5 cars), Alfa Romeo (4 cars), Ferrari (3 cars and 1 Dino).
With 22 vehicles, the Americans are disproportionately represented, while Japan is represented by just one car (1991 Nissan Figaro, CHF 28,000 to 32,000). Europeans make up the majority with 60 percent of the entries.
Porsche Cup collection
Porsche recognized early on that customers also wanted to compete with the fast sports cars on the race track. This is how the Porsche Cup came into being. An entire collection of five examples of these Cup cars will be auctioned at the Dolder. They show the entire range that was used between the 1980s and the current century.
What all Cup cars have in common is that they were built in fairly manageable numbers and yet, together with the spare parts business, generated good sales for Porsche. Just over 300 964 Cup racing cars were built between 1989 and 1993, while the predecessors and successors were built in similarly small numbers.
Although they were intended as racing cars, the early Cup cars in particular were often driven on the road. Some examples of both the 944 Turbo Cup racing car and the 964 Cup were also driven on the road, even though they stood out like colorful dogs with their colorful paintwork and decals.
The five Cup cars are offered at moderate prices, especially when you look at their condition. The 944 Turbo and the two new-era Cup cars 996 and 997 are valued at five figures, while the 964 and 993 variants are valued at around CHF 200,000.
The right cars to the music of Elvis
If you like the 1950s and American cars, you should definitely pay a visit to the Dolder on June 16, 2018. A large selection of convertibles and coupés will go under the hammer and there will even be a station wagon.
The spectrum ranges from the 1951 Studebaker Champion Convertible to the 1959 Cadillac Series 62, with prices in the five-figure range across the board.
Of course, the 1967 Shelby GT 350 Coupé, estimated at CHF 155,000 to 165,000, would be somewhat rarer and faster.
Cadillac's 1931 V12 Convertible Coupé, which is expected to fetch CHF 175,000 to 200,000, would be even more expensive.
Super classics at the start
Of course, the "blue chips" are not missing at the Dolder. Mention should be made of the Italian classics from the 1960s, such as the Maserati Mistral Cabriolet from 1964 or the Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 from 1966, but there will also be plenty on show from Germany, such as the Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC 5.0 from 1979 (CHF 40,000 to 45,000) or the early Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 from 1973 (CHF 550,000 to 650,000).
Ferrari is of course also involved, for example with a beautiful Dino 246 GTS from 1974 (CHF 285,000 to 295,000) or the elegant 365 GTC/4 from 1971 (CHF 250,000 to 300,000).
Hardly any bargains
You can't expect really cheap offers at the glamorous Dolder, but 13 lots are priced under CHF 50,000, including some of the motorcycles, of course, but also a Jaguar XJS 4.0 from 1996 (CHF 30,000 to 35,000).
It is certainly worth taking a closer look at what is on offer, and a visit is also recommended, especially if the weather plays along, as the auction will be held outside.
