McLaren's three-seater mid-engined sports cars from the 1990s have already set auction records on several occasions. The 1995 McLaren F1 now announced for the Pebble Beach auction by Gooding & Co could once again generate top bids, although the most expensive cars to date have all been LM-spec cars.
Only 105 of these vehicles with the famous central cockpit were built between 1992 and 1998. The engine came from BMW, the design and concept of the sports car from Gordon Murray. It is not for nothing that the car is one of the best sports cars of all time.
Almost a new car
What Gooding & Co can now offer in Pebble Beach on 13 and 14 August 2021 is the chassis 029, which was delivered with a body in the color "Creighton Brown", which only existed once on a McLaren F1. To date, the twelve-cylinder sports car has covered just 390 kilometers.
Long hidden away in a Japanese collection, it now belongs to a US-based enthusiast. The car was deliberately preserved in its as-delivered condition.
The car comes with some interesting accessories, including tools, cases, a TAG Heuer watch and lots of literature.
New world record?
In the last three years, McLaren F1s have been auctioned for USD 13.75, USD 15.62 and USD 19.81 million. Although no official estimates have yet been published by Gooding & Co, the estimate is likely to be in excess of USD 15 million. And who knows, perhaps this almost virgin McLaren F1 will break the 20 million barrier?
