The 76th Members' Meeting celebrates the pioneering spirit of Shelsley Walsh and Brooklands 'Specials' builders with an eclectic field of pre- and post-war vintage Specials in the inaugural Bolster Cup, to be held on Sunday, March 18. The Cup will feature an irresistible David vs. Goliath contest as thundering Bentleys, Delages and aero-motored Specials take on zippy GNs, Morgans and Austins.
The race takes its name from the brothers John and Richard Bolster, who embodied the spirit of the irrepressible and relentlessly inventive pre-war specialists. Their first car "Bloody Mary", built while the brothers were still at school, was created with the aim of "driving as dangerously as possible across a field".
While Richard Bolster died as a Royal Air Force soldier in World War 2, John became a popular journalist and radio reporter, as well as a founding member of Autosport magazine, which still exists today. "Bloody Mary" will be present at the Members' Meeting for those who wish to admire the concept, while another of Richard's specials - the Richard Bolster Special - will take its place on the grid to celebrate the legacy of the Bolster name.
With a huge range of shapes and sizes, the Bolster Cup will pay tribute to the legacy of the Shelsley Walsh engineers, well preserved today by the Vintage Sports Car Club. And the Bolster Cup is expected to be one of the highlights of the 76th Members' Meeting.
