Automobile reunification at the Prototype Car Museum
From November 13, 2014 to March 15, 2015, some of the most interesting racing cars from East and West Germany will be on display at the PROTOTYP car museum for the first time. With this "automotive reunification", the current special exhibition is dedicated to the period from 1945 to 1961, in which the idealism of the creators, the calculations of those in power and the joy of what was feasible are particularly evident between the end of the war and the building of the Berlin Wall.
Propaganda battle of the systems
25 years after the fall of the Wall, the special exhibition"TOGETHER AGAINST EACH OTHER - motor racing in West and East Germany between the end of the war and the building of the Wall" celebrates the designers and racing drivers from both German states. At the time, officials and politicians saw motor racing as a propaganda battle between the two systems.
Racing together against each other
However, most of the racers saw this primarily as a test of strength between competing colleagues or even friends. They had a common goal - and wanted to be the first to achieve it. It stands to reason that the black market and GDR restrictions placed high demands on improvisational and organizational skills in the run-up to the races. What is surprising, however, is the degree of creativity and fairness with which they raced against each other on and around the track.
Racing cars from East and West Germany
The presentation of racing cars from East and West Germany in a joint exhibition reveals some still unknown facets of German-German motor racing history and its players. The special exhibition shows vehicles such as Formula 2 cars built in-house based on pre-war technology, sleek racing sports cars such as the Porsche 550 Spyder and Formula Junior monoposti.
