The 3rd issue of Porsche Driver is here and accompanies the Porsche 911 Turbo S onto the race track. The new issue also celebrates 40 years of the transaxle, compares the Porsche 964 C4 with the Audi RS 2 and shows art cars in a completely different light.
Brave new world
This is how the success story of the Porsche transaxle models began 40 years ago: with an Audi 100 engine in a sports car study. With the Porsche 924 Turbo Targa, the 928-4, the 944 Cabrio Baur and the 968 Roadster, Porsche drivers can see five transaxle prototypes that never made it into mass production.
In the mid-1950s, a young up-and-coming man began his impressive career in Zuffenhausen: Valentin Schäffer. At Porsche, he became a specialist for turbocharged racing engines and developed the turbo technology that ensured dominance for decades.
Evolution instead of revolution
Porsche's successes in last year's World Endurance Championship (WEC) are already history. The team is preparing for the 2016 season and the new edition of the classic endurance race at Le Mans. In conversation with Porsche driver: Fritz Enzinger, head of the Porsche LMP1 project.
Most classic cars are only used in summer and when the weather is nice - that's when air conditioning can make a decisive contribution to fun and well-being. It's a good thing if one is already on board ex works, because operating older air conditioning systems with the current R134A coolant is less complicated than you might think.
Understanding and improving the chassis
Would you like a little more? No sports car driver will complain about a small increase in performance - but what about the suspension? The participants of the "Suspension" technology workshop organized by Porsche Fahrer took a look around the development laboratory of suspension specialist H&R in Lennestadt to find an answer to this question.
Mature, powerful, good-looking and above all: open. Prices are currently rising for all transaxle types, and the H license plate for the 944 S2 Cabrio is already within sight - a classic Porsche convertible for less than 25,000 euros will not be available for much longer.
Two sides of the same coin
The Porsche 964 Carrera 4 and the Audi RS 2 share the drive concept and even some components, are very similar and yet completely different. And which of the two has influenced the other more? A look at a time when Porsche and Audi were closer than ever before.
French world-class driver Jean Behra once built his own racing car for the emerging Formula 2 using Porsche components. In the most important race in 1959, the car outperformed the works Porsche and impressively demonstrated its class.
Gene manipulation
It's a Porsche, or rather: there are many of them. Beneath the familiar silhouette of the classic car lies several decades' worth of customized high technology. Based on a 912 with a 997 Cup engine, two US engineers have created a monster - PVX, the Porsche of extremes.
Art cars with a difference. Viennese artists transform two Porsche 996 Carrera 4s into mobile art objects.
