The 90th anniversary of the Monaco Grand Prix will be celebrated at this year's "Festival of Speed" in Goodwood. For this reason, former winners of the race will also be present from July 4-7.
Ever since William Grover-Williams slid to victory in a green Bugatti Type 35B in 1929, the streets and lanes of Monaco have become the epitome of speed, finesse and drama on a grand scale. The list of drivers who have won the crown jewels of European motorsport reads like a "who's who" of racing legends: Nuvolari, Caracciola, Fangio, Moss, Hill, Stewart, Lauda, Prost, Schumacher and Hamilton, to name but a few.
A selection of race cars that have won in Monaco will be in action on the famous hill at Goodwood on all days of the festival. Leading the line-up will be the Maserati 250F, in which Stirling Moss claimed a spectacular victory over Argentinian racing legend Juan Manuel Fangio in 1956. The latter had made up a gap of almost a minute only to see Moss just ahead of him on the home straight.
Five years later, Moss's greatest F1 victory came about. In an underpowered Rob Walker Racing Lotus 18, he kept the dominant "Sharknose" Ferraris at bay and won. The winning chassis, in which Stirling drove with the side panels removed to keep cool on hot days, will be one of the main attractions at Goodwood in June.
Between 1963 and 1973, Monaco was dominated by two men; "Mr. Monaco" Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart. Their racing cars will also be on display, driven by Sir Jackie himself and Graham's son Damon.
Also featured are the winning cars of Brabham, Brawn, Mercedes and Williams, while Monaco racing legends Mika Hakkinen, Ricardo Patrese and Mark Webber are joined by Emerson Fittipaldi, Jacky Ickx and Richard Attwood and many more.
Bringing together so many elite cars with histories to celebrate the 90th anniversary is a privilege. It's part of the spirit of what makes the Festival of Speed so special.
