The new Lego Creator Expert model pays homage to the cult car of the 1960s: the VW Beetle. The detailed Lego replica made of 1,167 elements was developed in collaboration with Volkswagen and will initially be available from August 1, 2016 at store.Lego.com and in the 13 Lego Stores in Germany and Austria.
His personal retro car
The VW Beetle was designed by Ferdinand Porsche. Like many other engineers, he had been working on concepts for small cars since the 1920s. Porsche had already designed such vehicles for Steyr and for NSU vehicles. The designer of the Lego VW Beetle is Mike Psiaki.
The VW Type 1, the Beetle, was mass-produced for almost 54 years from 1949 to 2003 and was the most-built car in the world until 2002 with over 21.5 million vehicles. In that year, it lost the title to the VW Golf. Production of the Lego VW Beetle has already begun so that the detailed replica of the car will be available on time.
The world's last Beetle rolled off the production line in Mexico in 2003 and can now be admired as an exhibit in the Autostadt in Wolfsburg. Even though the original VW Beetle is no longer produced today, with the Lego VW Beetle anyone can now build their own personal retro car and display it in their own home.
Brings back the surfer cult of the 60s
It was not until 1956 that the Beetle was fitted with an exterior mirror on the left-hand side as standard. The cubic capacity of the vehicle had already been increased to enable the engine to be more powerful. The dimensions of the original VW Beetle are approx. 4 x 1.5 x 1.5 m. The replica made from 1,167 Lego elements measures 15 x 29 x 12 cm.
In its early days, the VW Beetle was mainly produced in darker and muted colors. From 1960 onwards, lighter colors replaced the gray tones that had long been available. In the course of its history, however, there were also many special editions in really bright colors, such as the "Sunny Bug" in sunny yellow or the "May Beetle" in bright orange. The Lego VW Beetle is in no way inferior to its real-life model and is designed in an azure blue color pattern to match the surfer cult of the 60s.
For personal dream scenes
The sun's rays tickle your nose and your hair blows in the wind - you could also experience this feeling in the VW Beetle, as it was available as a convertible for a long time. However, production of this series model ended in January 1980. The Lego version represents the classic Beetle of the 1960s. The replica made of Lego bricks is designed so that the roof segment can be removed to reveal the detailed interior of the car with dashboard, steering wheel and folding seats.
The VW Beetle also made many appearances in the Hollywood dream factory and achieved fame as "Herbie", among other things.
Once the Lego VW Beetle has been assembled and is driving towards the sunset with the accompanying surfboard on the roof, this cult car can be used to create your own personal dream scenes.
Guaranteed building and playing fun
The Lego VW Beetle building set makes you want summer and guarantees building and playing fun with a touch of nostalgia.
The replica made of Lego bricks contains a wealth of original details and special features that give this vehicle its character and retro charm. The interior of the Lego VW Beetle is easily accessible via the hinged doors and the removable roof segment. The interior is designed in classic beige and includes a dashboard and steering wheel as well as seats that can be folded forward. The authentic air-cooled four-cylinder engine under the hood as well as a spare wheel and a petrol tank in the trunk add the finishing touches to this cult car.
The Lego Creator Expert VW Beetle is designed for builders aged 16 and over, costs 89.99 euros / 99.90 CHF and will be available from August 1, 2016 at store.LEGO.com.
