RM/Sotheby's traditionally kicks off the auction season during Rétromobile Week. On February 6, 2019, as usual, wealthy customers will be invited to a tent on Place Vauban to bid on 85 automobiles in addition to several automobiles, including a helmet from Ayrton Senna.
The total value of the cars is around EUR 50.2 million (CHF 56.7 million). On average, therefore, around EUR 590,700 (CHF 667,400) is expected per car.
Young offer
What is certainly surprising, also in view of the high average value, is the age of the vehicles. On average, the cars offered by RM/Sotheby's are not quite 41 years old, while the average age at Artcurial two days later is 56 years and at Bonhams the day after RM it is even 66 years.
The RM people have therefore opted for a particularly youngtimer and neoclassic-heavy range. In terms of value, these young cars are by no means lower on average than the older vintages, but this is also due to the fact that some particularly expensive young Bugatti hyper sports cars are looking for new owners.
Ferrari at the top
In terms of brand distribution, Ferrari (17 cars, plus 1 Dino) is in the lead, followed by Mercedes-Benz (10) and Porsche (9).
With just 29 brands, the range of brands is relatively narrow despite a few exotics - Brütsch, Connaught, Jordan, Osca, Panhard & Levassor Venturi.
From 1900 ...
The oldest car in the auction is a Panhard et Levassor 16 HP Rear Entrance Tonneau from 1900, which is offered for EUR 275,000 to 325,000.
Restored and equipped with a 16-hp 4.4-liter engine, chassis 2565 is certainly suited to transporting buyers back to the early days of the automobile.
... until 2018
Almost new are two cars from Bugatti and Mercedes-Benz, a Chiron from 2018 (EUR 2.36 to 2.75 million) and a "Final Edition" G-Class 65 AMG from the same year (EUR 250,000 to 300,000).
Valuables from all eras
Among the 14 cars, which RM/Sotheby's believes should all fetch over a million euros, there is a pre-war car - a 1935 Hispano-Suiza K6 - as well as cars from the 1950s - a Porsche 550 RS Spyder from 1956, BMW 507 from 1959, OSCA MT4-2AD 1350 Morelli from 1955 -, the 1960s - Ferrari 275 GTB/6C Alu from 1966, Ferrari 250 GT Pinin Farina Cabriolet from 1960 -, as well as cars from the decades thereafter - Ferrari F50, Bugatti, Bugatti and others.Ferrari F50, Bugatti EB110 Super Sport, Ferrari F40 LM, Porsche 918 -.
Five BMW Alpina
A not inconsiderable part of the RM offering from Paris comes from the previously announced "Youngtimer Collection", a private collection of over 140 younger cars that will be offered at various auctions in 2019.
In Paris, for example, there are five BMW Alpina cars from 1982 to 2000, including two B7 coupés, a B9 3.5 from 1983 and two B12 coupés and saloons.
Estimates vary from EUR 25,000 to 240,000, with a 1982 B7 S Turbo at the top end.
Interesting Fiat trio
Things get really interesting with a trio of Fiat cars, as they not only represent three eras, but also completely different vehicles.
The Fiat 520 convertible from 1927 (EUR 15,000 to 25,000) is symbolic of the cars that Fiat built in the 1920s.
The Fiat 2800 with Touring Berlinetta bodywork from 1940 (EUR 200,000 to 250,000), on the other hand, is more of a harbinger of the luxury and sports cars that only really caused a stir after the war.
And the Fiat Dino Coupé from 1968 (EUR 40,000 to 60,000)? This is certainly a contemporary witness that shows that Fiat did not want to be reduced to small and large limousines in the sixties and that it also sought proximity to Ferrari.
Super classics too, of course
Of course, the super classics were not missing at RM in Paris. These include a Maserati Mistral 3.7 Spyder from 1966 (EUR 425,000 to 275,000) and a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster from 1957 (EUR 800,000 to 1.0 million).
Porsche enthusiasts may be interested in the Porsche 356 B Carrera 2 from 1962 (EUR 470,000 to 580,000) or the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring from 1973 (EUR 500,000 to 550,000).
And for fans of raw power wrapped in an elegant body, the Shelby 427 Cobra from 1966 (EUR 800,000 to 1.0 million) will certainly cause daydreams.
Hardly any bargains
RM will hardly be able to buy really cheaply in Paris, especially as only 15 percent of the cars (13 examples) will be auctioned without a minimum bid.
There are only a few vehicles under 100,000 euros, including the two Mercedes-Benz E 500s and the Porsche 928 GTS from 1992.
The 1957 Brütsch Mopetta minicar, which was estimated as a single-seater for EUR 90,000 to 120,000 but will be auctioned without a reserve price, will hardly be among the cheap cars.
