RM/Sotheby's is talking about a stylish new auction experience for the sale on December 10, 2022 in Miami. The venue will be a modern building, designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, on South Beach in the southern city by the sea.
58 cars (and a few automobilia as well as Ferrari engines and luggage sets) will go under the hammer, with an average age of just 25 years. The total value was estimated at USD 41.4 million, so the "chic" Miami visitors are expected to shell out USD 713,233 per car. It will be particularly interesting for "gamblers", as 62% of the vehicles will go under the hammer without a minimum bid.
Only 14 brands represented
14 Porsches, nine Ferraris and BMWs as well as eight Mercedes-Benz make up more than two thirds of the offer. They are joined by Bentley, Bugatti, Ford, Hummer, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Lotus, RUF and Subaru.
There are no more brands, Maserati or Alfa Romeo are missing as well as Aston Martin or an American manufacturer other than Hummer.
Young cars
The year of manufacture ranges from 1973 to 2020, so cars from the sixties and before are completely missing. No wonder the average age is also low, especially as only just over a third of the cars are already classic cars, with all the others being youngtimers or younger.
Ten worth millions
Ten of the 58 cars are valued at over one million American dollars. At the top is a Ferrari F50 from 1995 (USD 5.5 to 6.5 million), followed by a Ferrari Enzo from 2003 (USD 3.25 to 3.75 million) and a Porsche 959 SC from 1988, which was valued at a whopping USD 3.25 to 3.75 million.
This is a Canepa 959 with upgrades and over 800 hp.
The rest of the top ten is made up of a Ford, two more Ferraris, two Bugattis and two more Porsches, including a 2005 Carrera GT for USD 1.55 to 1.75 million.
The Daytona Spider
Special mention should be made of the Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider from 1973, the oldest car in the auction. Chassis 16835 is the 89th of 121 open-top Daytonas built and the first owner sold the car to the famous motorcycle stuntman Evel Knievel. Later owners included disc jockey Frankie Crocker and baseball legend Reggie Jackson.
The car has never been fully restored, although the interior, wheels and paint have been replaced. The mileage is now 29,431 and the estimated value is USD 2.2 to 2.4 million.
The classic car collection
The Miami auction will see cars from the "Youngtimer Collection" go under the hammer, which are mainly, but not exclusively, sporty German products from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.
A Porsche 928 GTS from 1995 (USD 175,000 to 200,000), a BMW B6 2.8 from 1979, a Ferrari 512M from 1995 (USD 400,000 to 450,000) and a BMW Alpina B7 from 1987 caught the eye when browsing through the catalog.
Mercedes fans should perhaps take a look at the 450 SLC 5.0 Coupé from 1981 or the 560 SEL AMG 6.0 from 1989.
Two Evos
Two evolutionary vehicles from Mercedes-Benz and Lancia are also on offer, namely a Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo II from 1990 (USD 225,000 to 275,000) and a Lancia Rally 037 Stradale Evolution II from 1982, for which USD 500,000 to 600,000 has been set.
Expensive?
Some cars are offered with high prices, such as a Ferrari 328 GTS from 1989 originally delivered in Switzerland, which was estimated at a whopping USD 150,000 to 250,000, which becomes at least a little more understandable in view of its mileage of only 2400 kilometers.
At USD 1.6 to 1.9 million, the Bugatti EB110 GT from 1994 also has an impressive estimate, especially compared to a year ago, despite having 30,426 km on the clock.
At USD 60,000 to 80,000, the beautiful yellow Lotus Esprit V8 from 2002 as an anniversary model (25 years of Esprit) almost seems like a bargain, especially as it went under the hammer without a reserve price. And after all, the USD has just dropped a few percent, which means that most cars have already paid for their freight.
