Heinz W. Jordan and Dr. Dietrich Krahn revived the legendary airfield race in Kassel-Calden in 2017.
After the engines roared again successfully at Kassel-Calden airfield in 2017 after 30 years, the event will take place again in 2018 by popular demand.
There will be an attractive circuit for cars and motorcycles with a length of 2.6 km, including the old runway. As in 2017, demonstration runs will be held. There will definitely be a great driving experience with an extended route - and of course a good selection of North Hessian delicacies.
The history of the airfield races in Kassel-Calden
The airfield races in Calden, famous beyond the borders of Hesse and Germany, began with the International ADAC Hessenpreis in August 1971 with races for the German Circuit Championship for cars, races for Formula 3 and Formula Vee vehicles, sports cars and prototypes, as well as races for the German Road Championship for motorcycles. The races were held on the runway of Kassel-Calden Airport, which had opened a year earlier. Among the drivers who competed in Calden over the years were Jochen Mass, Klaus Ludwig, Hans-Joachim "Strietzel" Stuck, Hans Heyer, Hellmut Kelleners and Willi Kauhsen. Among the international drivers, Nelson Piquet, Vittorio Brambilla, Henri Pescarolo, Bob Wollek, Toine Hezemans, Tim Schenken, Herbert Müller and Karl Wendlinger should be mentioned. Among the motorcyclists, Toni Mang, Dieter Braun, Martin Wimmer and Rolf Steinhausen stood out.
Racing events were held regularly on the Calden airfield circuit until 1987. In addition to touring cars and formula cars, vehicles such as the Porsche 917 and McLaren M 20 with power outputs in excess of 800 hp also raced on the 2.65 km track. From 1977, there were regular separate racing events for the two-wheeler fraction, including races for the so-called Superbikes. 1987 then saw the end of circuit racing in northern Hesse, as an instrument landing system was installed in Calden, although at the end of the 1970s, an extension of the track was even considered to enable a circuit worthy of a Grand Prix. The last official motorsport event took place as a night prologue in 1997 at an ADAC Nordhessen Rallye.
This year's starting field is already very well filled with around 300 participants. A few places are still available in the sidecar class and the vintage class.
The airfield race will take place from August 24 to 26, 2018 at the old Kassel - Calden airfield.
