The Swiss mountain race on the Gurnigel can look back on over 100 years of history and attracts over 10,000 visitors each year in good weather.
As usual, numerous volunteers and riders from the region have already done a lot of preparatory work on the 3.7 km route between Dürrbach and Gurnigelbad for the 50th edition of the traditional hill climb.
A lot of tradition - that needs to be celebrated
Since 1970, an SM race has taken place here without interruption, and we are honoring this with a small but fine show block. The organizers have deliberately limited themselves to a dozen participants and vehicles that have shaped this race in the past.
The most prominent "legend" is Gurnigel king Fredy Amweg (20 daily victories between 1973 and 1998) on his 1976 F2 home-built bike, but the eleven other "legends" are also likely to bring back many memories for long-time visitors.
The organizers have deliberately limited themselves to a dozen participants and vehicles that have shaped this race in the past. Small but nice is the motto, because this year, too, the focus is clearly on racing - as usual, the Swiss elite will be taking part in the penultimate round of the national mountain championship on the Gurnigel. In addition to Gurnigel king Fredy Amweg, Marcel Steiner's father Heinz, who is driving the Martini CN car again 20 years after his retirement, and Jürg Dürig in his spectacular BMW 635 CSi can also be seen.
The complete list with pictures of the vehicles is available on the event website.
A visit to the Gurnigel on September 7 and 8, 2019 is therefore worthwhile for fans of both classic and modern racing cars.
