The slowest Porsches of all time
Real Porsches with a top speed of 20 kilometers per hour? These are the Allgaier Porsche tractors that will be presented during the Hamburg Motor Classics from October 19 to 21 at the Hamburg exhibition grounds. Because a Porsche was not always just the epitome of a sports car. Porsche-Diesel Motorenbau GmbH, which manufactured tractors with diesel engines in Manzell on Lake Constance in the 1950s and early 1960s, is inextricably linked to the history of the car manufacturer.
Allgaier Porsche Friends present Porsche tractors
It is precisely these tractors that the Allgaier Porsche Freunde e.V. association from Reinfeld is dedicating itself to, bringing three legendary tractors to Hamburg. According to association chairman Stefan Barten, the smallest of the tractors built at the time, the Porsche Diesel Junior, and the largest of the tractors produced, the Porsche Diesel Master, will be on show. The third vehicle is an Allgaier AP22 System Porsche, which has an extraordinary history.
The tractor, built in 1954, was discovered in a barn near Hanover by a club member. The owner at the time reported that the tractor was in use until the 1970s. It was then parked in a corner of the barn and forgotten until only the left front wheel was still sticking out from under a haystack. After long negotiations, an agreement was reached and the farmer pulled the AP22 out of the barn with a tractor. Later, the classic car was given diesel fuel and a new battery - and started up. Today it sits in a brightly lit garage awaiting restoration.
It is not least this indestructibility that makes Porsche tractors popular classics today. "A small Porsche Diesel Junior can cost up to 15,000 euros, while the large Porsche Diesel Master can cost up to 75,000 euros," explains Stefan Barten. And this despite the fact that tractors were mass-produced in their day. While exactly 76,302 units of the first Porsche 356 sports car were produced between 1948 and 1965, around 120,000 tractors were produced. According to Barten, 11,740 of these are still officially registered today, while around the same number are sitting in garages or barns without registration. There are plenty of opportunities to find a Porsche with 18 to 40 hp engine power.
